Reflection 2 task description
Task
Reflections are critical statements that integrate students’ reflections on the course (classes,
readings, interactions with other students and associated experiences).
Unlike the first reflection, Reflection 2 asks you to reflect on the ideas expressed in a short text
and link them to what you have learned in this course. You may illustrate your reflections with
relevant examples from the field of International Business Ethics.
Drawing upon your learning from Weeks 1-10 of this Unit of Study, write a critical reflection on
the views expressed in the text in the box below.
An influential international business ethics scholar has argued the following
points:
1. Multinational corporations ought not to deprive workers in host countries of
their rights and should even assist in protecting some rights—minimal
education and subsistence—but they have no duty to provide direct aid to
those whose rights have been abridged. The reason is that such direct aid
‘would be unfair to the profit-making corporation which is designed to
achieve an economic mission and as a moral actor possesses an exceedingly
narrow personality’.
2. In this view the economic mission of the MNC makes it a poor substitute for
a government in dispensing welfare. It is neither a real (moral) person nor a
democratic institution and has no mandate to render more than minimal
assistance except in unusual circumstances (for example, in the event of an
earthquake). It is not within the moral capacity of a corporation to rectify
deficiencies in human rights, such as minimal education and subsistence,
even if it is notionally within its resource capacity.
3. Quite simply, the languages of personal morality, of virtue and vice, of
personal perfection and the maximisation of human welfare are
inappropriate to considerations of corporate responsibility. The business
corporation is a very restricted, artificial person, and only restricted moral
responses may be expected of it. These are not responses that presuppose a
human psychology, but those that relate to legal and contractual duties and
rights, responsibilities, and benefits.

Structure, word limit, and referencing
Just like all academic writing, the reflective essay you are asked to write needs a key message that
is used to structure the narrative. Since you are asked to reflect on a provided text, make sure that
your reflection addresses all the relevant points made in the text. As a writer, you need to make
sure that your writing is effective and that your marker understands the significance of your
reflection. You are required to follow the following structure:
1. Introduction
2. Body
3. Conclusion
A good way, but not the only way, would be to put your key message in the introduction, use topic
sentences to highlight the main point for each paragraph, and conclude with the implications of
your key message.
This assignment is worth 20% of your final grade, has a recommended word limit of 1,500 -1,800
words, and should not exceed 1,800 words. If you include intext references your paper must contain
a reference list, which will then also be included in the word count. If you use references, you must
do so in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA) style guide 7th edition.
Details are available on the Library website. The paper must adhere to the University’s Academic
Honesty in Coursework Policy 2015, and other relevant University policies.
Submitting your paper
Reflection 2 is due no later than 11:59 pm on Monday, 16 May 2022 and must be submitted in .doc
or .docx format.
Your filename must take the format SID_IBUS3104_2022S1_RF2.docx, where SID is your SID, e.g. a
student with the SID 012345678 would have the filename:
012345678_IBUS3104_2022S1_RF2.docx
The University has authorised and mandated the use of text-based similarity detecting software for
all text-based written assignments. The task must therefore be submitted through Turnitin on
Canvas. You may resubmit the essay until the due date/time, after which no further resubmissions
will be accepted. You are responsible for ensuring the correct document (not a draft) is submitted.
The document submitted at the deadline is the document that will be marked, and no discussion will
be entered into to the contrary nor any special pleading entertained.
Grading
Reflection 2 will be graded against the following criteria:
• Quality and depth of critical reflection (70%)
• Presentation and communication (20%)
