General tips

All of the companies and people in the following questions are fictitious but inspired by
experiences of many organisations. Please do not search the web looking for these organisations.

Length of answers

• Allocate no more than 650 words per question; you cannot ‘save’ words from one answer and
use them for another.
• Do not attach appendices. If the content is important include it in your response.
• There is no minimum number of words per question.
• The 10% rule does NOT apply (i.e. you cannot go over the word limit by 10%).
• Please use complete sentences – no bullet points.
• No pictures.

Formatting your answers

• Put your answers into an A4-size document with standard margins (usually around 2.54 cm)
and a common font (like Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman) in 12-point font size.
• The document should be double-spaced.
• Insert your student ID at the top of every page.
• Include the page number on every page (header or footer is fine).
• You do not need to copy and paste the scenarios into your document.
• After each of your answers, include a word count. (So, there will be a word count for answer 1,
for answer 2, and for answer 3; not a total word count for the whole document).
• Please start your answer to each question on a new page.
• Clearly indicate which question you are answering.

Sources

• Draw on lectures, the readings, and the information in the case to answer the questions. You
are not expected to cite or reference any of these sources.
• No need to use sources from outside the lectures or assigned readings. You can write a high-
quality response without using external sources.
• All exams will be submitted through TurnItIn for a similarity report. Copying text from any
source without using quotation marks and/or indicating the source will be considered
plagiarism.
• Do not discuss or complete the exam with anyone else until after the exam deadline has
passed.

SECTION 1

This section contains 4 (long answer questions). You are required to answer THREE questions.
This section accounts for 50 marks.

Question 1

Roger, the General Manager of Mafee Architects sighed as he read the diversity report. It showed
that only 20% of their architects were female. And this was becoming a problem. Most of their
work involves designs for residential homes (new builds as well as home renovations) and it is
usually a female client who makes all the key decisions. Roger felt they the firm had lost a few
jobs to another local firm of architects with more women on staff. Over coffee with Stan a senior
architect who had been with the firm for a very long time, Roger said “I don’t understand why we
have so few women architects. When we are hiring, we place advertisements on all the job
boards (e.g., Seek, Indeed) and we get our three top architects to conduct the interviews. Bill,
Andrew and John are good men who never discriminate against a woman applicant.” Stan asked
about the questions used at the interviews. Roger replied, “we follow the advice of HR and
generate a list of questions and ensure that we ask each applicant the same questions.”

Roger has been directed by the CEO of Mafee Architects to increase the number of women
architects. The CEO says quotas are the best option. Will the introduction of quotas be effective
in redressing the gender imbalance at Mafee Architects? Why or why not? Be sure to use
evidence from the case and the content covered in our subject in your response.

Question 2

You joined Charter Inc., a software development company about five years ago. You were
disappointed with the orientation program for new staff. After filling in some forms for payroll
and taxation purposes, you were shown your desk, the location of the toilets and the printer and
expected to get to work!

Now that you occupy a role in the HR department you have decided to work on an orientation
program for new staff. You notice that many of your competitor companies focus on history and
culture of the organisation in their orientation programs. But your own experience suggests that
new employees want more practical information in their orientation program, such as who they
report to and how to get access to a parking permit for the company car park.

Using evidence from this case and the content covered this semester, provide two
recommendations to improve the value of the orientation program for new hires and Charter Inc.

Question 3

You have joined the HR team for an online cosmetics company (Amazing Beauty). Orders for
makeup and skin care have gone up considerably over the last 12 months. All the time people
(both men and women) spend on zoom calls during the pandemic has made them more conscious
about their appearance. There are two types of employees at Amazing Beauty: (1) the employees
who work in the call centre providing advice to customers about products and (2) the pickers. The
pickers are the employees who walk about the warehouse picking products off a shelf and placing
the products into a box for shipping.

The market for skin care and make up is getting very competitive. Not only are their local
competitors but customers are increasingly turning to companies in other countries for their
products. Your market research shows that beauty consumers are (a) very price sensitive (b) care
about the quality of advice they get from the call centre workers and (c) the efficiency and
accuracy of the deliveries. For Amazing Beauty, the costs associated with product returns and
rectifying wrong or incomplete orders are substantial.

Currently the pickers are paid in the range $32,000 - $36,000. Employees are usually hired at the
bottom of the pay range (i.e., $32,000) and after each year of service their pay is increased by
$1,000 until they reach the maximum of $36,000.

Over the last few months there has been an increase in the number of customer’s complaints
about the time it takes to talk with a call centre worker. A colleague in HR suggests Amazing
Beauty change the way it pays the call centre workers. Your colleague suggests they should be
paid based on their performance, as assessed by customer ratings. Do you agree? Why or why
not? Be sure to use evidence from the case and the content covered in our subject in your
response.

Question 4

For the sixth month in a row the level of absenteeism at Abacus Accounting has been
unacceptably high. On any day of the week up to 30% of the employees do not turn up for their
scheduled shift – they report in as sick. One of the performance indicators for managers at
Abacus Accounting is the level of absenteeism in the team. So, this high, ongoing level of
absenteeism is likely to drag down your performance rating and your performance pay.

As their manager you get to review and approve each team members application for sick leave.
You notice that employees tend to apply for a single day of leave. At Abacus Accounting
employees are required to supply a medical certificate if they take two or more days of sick leave.
A good friend (Hatti) is the head of HR at the Eastern General Hospital. Hatti tells you that at her
hospital these single days of sick leave are referred to as “doona days”. Employees take a day off
to lay in bed to deal with stresses in the job.

You have read about employee health and wellbeing programs. It appears that when employees
do a bit more exercise and eat healthy food, they are less likely to report in sick. After a bit of
5

investigation, you discover a local business called Corporate Health Solutions can run healthy
cooking classes at lunch time and yoga classes at end of each day.

Using evidence from the case and content covered in our subject, should Abacus Accounting
introduce an employee health and wellbeing program to reduce the level of absenteeism? Why
or why not?
