GSBS6481 Trimester 2, 2022 Assessment #2 Group Project1GROUP PROJECT ASSESSMENT GUIDELINESAssessment OverviewThis assessment consists of two components, i.e. a written report (20%) and a grouppresentation (10%). The written report is due on Sunday of Week 11, 24 July 2022 at 11:59pm;and the group presentations will be held in week 10 (the schedule is available in this site). You are the employees of a prestigious management consulting company and your serviceshave been hired to help an Australian company to perform a strategic analysis as part of itsinternational development plan. The market that this company is currently interested in is oneof the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.1 As consultants, yourproject is to prepare an International Business Development plan for an Australian company ofyour choice. When you choose your “employer”, they should be a real company from Australiathat has either not yet entered the targeted market, or has limited presence in the targeted marketbut is seeking opportunities for a significant expansion in that market. Your report shouldconvey the essential information your client needs, and provide a preliminary recommendationon whether to enter the market – or in the case that the company has already entered in theASEAN region, whether to expand the business significantly - at this time and by which entrymode. Final marks of individual members of the same group will be peer moderated.Learning Objectives - As a research exercise this project evaluates your ability to identify andretrieve valid information to inform your analysis. Your ability to communicate in writing withsufficient clarity to convey complex information in an international business context will alsobe developed and evaluated through this assessment.Advice - Three approaches to strategic analysis are outlined during this unit of study - industry-based, resource-based and institution-based views of strategy. In this report, you are expectedto structure your analysis of relevant data in line with the broad analytical frameworks outlinedin your lectures. You must conduct some form of strategic analysis of your chosen firm’sorganizational capabilities, taking into account the industry environment in the market of yourchoice, and the impact that institutional differences will have on the firm’s ability to compete. For example, you should consider:• What is the industry context in the market (e.g. customers, competitors, etc.); and howattractive the market is for your chosen firm?• What resources and capabilities your chosen firm has to compete with?• What institutional and/or country factors (e.g. regulatory & cultural factors) will affectthe firm’s ability to compete?• How all of these affect your decision to enter/expand the market and the choice of entrymode?Critical Analysis - Only use data that you can demonstrate to be relevant (i.e. data that can beconvincingly used to help you make on decision on, if, when and how this firm should enterAustralia). Your ability to explicitly analyse the data you have is a primary concern of theexaminers of this report (i.e. your ability to draw out the implications of the data for yourchosen firm). You must consistently interpret and/or explain the implications of the data foryour chosen firm, rather than writing on the topic or presenting information and leaving it to1 You can choose one prospective country among the ASEAN countries as the targeted market for your analysis.GSBS6481 Trimester 2, 2022 Assessment #2 Group Project2the examiner/or the board of directors to analyse what it all means. You must consistently spellout the implications of factors you identify in relation to the industrial environment, theresources of the company compared with incumbents of the market, and the institutionaldifferences between Australia and the targeted country for the company’s decision toenter/expand in this market, the likelihood of profit in the targeted market and how this analysisleads to your recommendations. You should also note that, based on your data and analysis, itmight be appropriate to come to a negative conclusion. This assignment should not beinterpreted as an order to enter or expand in the foreign market at all costs. Do not come toconclusions at odds with the data presented in the report. All data should be discussed in alogical and coherent manner. Your data should logically build to theconclusion/recommendations and your discussion should be consistent throughout the report.Level of Research - This report must provide enough evidence to make a well-informeddecision or reasonably robust recommendations to the board of directors who havecommissioned this report. If there is a paucity of relevant information in one-area (e.g. no dataon market size) you are expected to compensate by using other relevant data to make yourrecommendations. For example, drawing inferences about market potential based on thenumber and strength of competitors; examining the markets statistics for cognate or substituteproduct; or using a broader definition of the industry. This analytical flexibility will result inevery group having enough data to write a report and to make strategically soundrecommendations. Please remember, the more relevant the data is to your chosen companythe easier it will be for you to explicitly analyse its strategic implications in the context ofyour business developmental plan for the foreign market. In the unlikely event that yourpreliminary research leads you to the conclusion that there is not enough data on your chosenfirm and the industry and institutional environments, then you will need to choose another firm. This is a decision that will need to be taken by your group early on in the assignment therefore, you will need to conduct some preliminary research immediately after you group has chosenits employing firm.Writing, referencing, formatting, submission and word count – Please use size 12 font, 1.5line spacing and ensure that your project is approximately 2,500 words in length (exclusive ofappendices, tables, and references etc.). Use the Word Count Feature in your word processorto indicate the word length of the front page. You are required to submit this assignmentelectronically through Turnitin and no hard copy is required for this assignment. All sourcesconsulted should be consolidated in a bibliography at the end, in a consistent format inaccordance with the format outlined in the Student Manual. Do not include data in theappendices of the report that is not referred to in the main body of the report. The appendicesshould be consistent with and used to complement the discussion in the body of the report.Group work - A Pre-project Action Plan is to be completed, signed by all group members, andsubmitted to the lecturer/tutor if requested. Students are to actively manage the conduct ofmeetings and record each member’s contribution. The Pre-Project Action Plan template can befound in this section of the Canvas course site. Once the group has discussed and agreed on theform, one of the group members should email the completed form to the lecturer by the end ofWeek 5. All group members should be copied in the email.Presentation Overview – You are also required to provide an online oral presentation for yourgroup project. You should follow the same conceptual framework that you will use indeveloping the written report, and coordinate among group members for this joint presentation.A copy of the powerpoint slides should be forwarded to the lecturer prior to the presentation.GSBS6481 Trimester 2, 2022 Assessment #2 Group Project3You are encouraged to make the presentation interesting, provocative and to stimulate the restof the class into discussion and participation. The schedule of presentations is to be advised. The lecturer will provide feedback during your presentation, which you can use for improvingyour final report.Marking Criteria (30%)Criteria Unacceptable Acceptable Good Very Good ExcellentGroup Consulting Project - Final Written Report (20 %)Knowledge andcomprehensionof key theoreticalconcepts used toanalyse data inthe context of theassessment task:30%Identifies andunderstandsfew key aspectsof industry-based view,RBV andinstitutions-based viewduring theanalysis.Identifies andunderstandssome keyaspects ofindustry-based view,RBV andinstitutions-based viewduring theanalysis.Identifies andunderstandsmost keyaspects ofindustry-based view,RBV andinstitutions-based viewduring theanalysis.Identifies andunderstandsall key aspectsof industry-based view,RBV andinstitutions-based viewduring theanalysis.Identifies anddemonstrates anintegrativeunderstanding ofall key aspects ofindustry-basedview, RBV andinstitutions-basedview during theanalysis.Level ofresearch andcritical analysisof data in thecontext of theassessment task:30%.Identifiesinappropriatedata with littleexplicit analysisof theimplications fortheir chosenfirm.
