4CCE1MCP Design: Making a Connection
Prepared by Dr Francesco Ciriello
You will be required to undertake this alternative assessment in place of your deferred coursework
component or as reassessment for your failed coursework attempt. Please note, this also includes in class
tests which are scheduled within term outside of the examination window.

This alternative assessment for 4CCE1MCP (2021/22 academic year) is designed to replace the outstanding
components below.

Group Coursework Submission – Remote Control Design, Build & Test of a Ship for Environmental Clean-
up

Alternative Assessment:

1. Individual Design Report & Video – Servo-Rudder Design for a RC Ship

You will have to design, build, and test a mechanism to connect a servomotor to a rudder. The servo
mechanism should be designed to adequately steer the ship that your team built for the MCP group project.
You should indicate how your mechanism secures both the servomotor and rudder to the ship hull.

Marks will be awarded for the quality of the presentation, design & analysis of the built mechanism.

Build materials: You are not expected to re-build the entire ship or re-use your original build from the
module. You will have to source your own materials for construction. You can use the Arduino board and
servomotor available from your first-year lab at home kits.

Submission requirements:
You should submit:
- a 1-page report on your mechanical design, build & test which includes:
▪ a section that explains the rationale for your design
▪ a technical drawing of the mechanism with appropriate labelling of dimensions
▪ a step-to-step guide on how to manufacture and assemble the mechanism, including
relevant pictures and diagrams for each step
▪ an analysis of your built system response and its effectiveness at moving the rudder,
providing sufficient torque to move the rudder in water and withstanding disturbances.
- a screenshot of your control logic, as implemented in a Simulink model or Arduino IDE.
- a 3 min video recording of the servo mechanism in operation with a voiceover explaining the
rationale of your design.

2. Reflective report on teamwork in MCP
You will have to submit a 1-page reflective essay on your experience working in a team for 4CCE1MCP
and how you will use lessons learnt from this experience to plan teamwork in a future run of the
module. You will have to submit a formal project plan for a team running MCP that includes:
• a project timeline, deliverables and milestones,
• a list of tests deduced from requirements and map these to your project timeline
• identification of risk and planned mitigation strategies,
• work packages by role, with an expectation of the resources needed to complete each of
these.

Submission requirements:
You should submit a 2-page reflective report on teamwork in MCP, as described above.

Your report should be a maximum of 1 written page + 2 page of appendix for part 1 and a maximum of 1
written page + 1 page of appendix for part 2. The appendix should contain your worked solutions,
screenshots of code and images of any plots and drawing that you generate. The page limit includes
figures, all plots should have a title, labelled axis and units. You should use a 12pt Sans Serif font, e.g.
Calibri.

Submission area for individual coursework
Coursework is due 4pm, Thursday 4th August 2022. As clarified in the email sent to students in June
(Engineering Assessments Period 3 – August information, 16/06/22), no extensions will be permitted. For
those with approved PAA, please follow the separate email sent. Submissions will not be accepted after
the deadline has passed, please ensure that you leave plenty of time to check over and upload your work.
If you are unable to submit by this deadline, email engineering-ug@kcl.ac.uk and apply for mitigation as
soon as possible.

Further information on the submission area and where to submit can be found via – Course: Engineering
Coursework Submissions - August 2022 (kcl.ac.uk)

Support for carrying out this assessment is available, students taking re-assessment can contact Dr
Francesco Ciriello by email at francesco.ciriello@kcl.ac.uk during the assessment period.

Additional resources & tips
You are encouraged to complete laboratory exercises for weeks 22-26 to develop skills in system
modelling and control that are relevant to the coursework.
