Parties, plants and papers. These are the three elements that underpin the monotony of Hanna
Holland’s life as a full-time philosophy major, part-time party girl and self-proclaimed ‘green
thumb’. As president of the university’s ‘Plant Society’, Hanna balances a whirlwind of ferns, fun
and frivolity with the pending pressures of potentially failing her classes this semester. Stuck for
inspiration on her upcoming thesis, Hanna’s seemingly innocent study break leaves her with a
lifeless plant and an even more battered ego. In a race against the clock with only days until her
assignment is due, Hanna must not only redeem herself as president of the plant society, but also
write an essay that attempts to unravel the pillars of philosophy – all whilst dealing with two rather
quirky and mischievous housemates. In a situation that is rather dire upon first glance, Hanna finds
inspiration from her everyday experiences to succeed in a tale of growth, determination and
resilience.
The film is pitched as an M-rated comedy drama for release on a streaming site such as Netflix. The
primary target audience consists of young adults, with 50% of Netflix users under the age of 35
(Srivastava, 2020). However, the ‘cool’ comedic feel and timeless thematic traits will also resonate
with both younger teens and older demographics to establish the perfect family-friendly film.
MM1 Directors Statement
Assessment Guidelines
Write a Director’s Statement outlining how you would direct a film based on one of your own original stories. This can
be either the same idea you used for your visual sequence or another original idea you may have. While we assess the
story, you are mainly assessed on your ability to communicate your vision of a film, encompassing its key elements,
from a director’s point of view. You must use what you learned in the lectures about genre, camera, lighting, sound,
editing and more to illuminate a story on the cinema screen. The overall word limit is 1600 words with the usual +/-
10% applying. The Title and Logline are NOT included in the overall word count.
Simplified Rubric
• Story: creativity, thematic sophistication and narrative cohesion: 30%
• Director’s vision: use of FIVE of genre, production design, sound design including music,
editing, casting, locations, camera, lighting, special and visual FX: 50%
• Engagement and effort: 10%
• Presentation incl. spelling and grammar: 10%

Director’s Vision
Genre
“Blossom” is a Young Adult Coming of Age Comedy-Drama feature length film that draws
inspiration from directors such as Greta Gerwig and Nora Ephron, and films such as The Perks of
Being a Wallflower (2012), Booksmart (2019) and Death at a Funeral (2007). Based on my visual
sequence, the film follows a few months in Hanna Holland’s (Hailee Steinfeld) life as she navigates
the trials and tribulations of entering adulthood with a light-hearted, comedic take on how young
adults tackle grief.
On the surface, the comedy centres around the unconventional friendship between three
housemates and the death of a plant. Xavier (Miles Teller) accidentally leaves floor cleaner in
Hanna’s watering can, which she then uses on her plant. As a result of this, the plant dies and she is
sent into an anxious frenzy, which is only heightened by her academic stress. With the help of Greta
(Laura Harrier) and Xavier, Hanna buries her beloved plant in the backyard and the trio host a small,
yet greatly exaggerated funeral.
The deeper, dramatic effect of the film is intricately intertwined with the aforementioned comedic
feel, and mainly focuses on the recent passing of Hanna’s father, Fred (Russell Crowe). Whilst the
audience never actually finds out how Hanna’s father passed away since it occurred before the film
takes place, it is clearly made evident through sporadic flashbacks when Hanna gets drunk that they
had a very close relationship and she has been supressing her emotions. The audience intermittently
learns that Hanna’s love for gardening and involvement in the ‘Plant Society’ stems from the
influence of her late father and that is the real reason she is so distressed.
The dead plants acts as a symbolic representation of grief as she discovers love and growth from
death, whilst these themes are further perpetuated through Hanna’s love for her favourite author,
Joan Didion. This provides symbolic foreshadowing as she reads “The Year of Magical Thinking,” a
novel that focuses on overcoming grief, at various and obvious points throughout the film. The
comedic aspect is used to tackle these tough topics, such as death and grief, in order to make it
more relatable to young adults.
Hanna’s journey in the film ends with the camera closing in over Hanna’s shoulder as she submits
her thesis, aptly titled “Gardening, Grief and Growth.” The trio dance in their tiny, dimly lit backyard
overlooking the city as Xavier cracks jokes to retain comedic feel. Hanna’s gaze catches the spot
where they buried the plant. A new leaf has sprouted, signalling life. Hanna smiles and looks up to
the sky for dramatic effect as this brief moment of closure marks the end of this particular journey.
Casting
‘Blossom” centres around the main protagonist: Hanna Holland, a bright and energetic 21-year-old
university student. The following casting considerations will appropriately embody the contrasting
personality traits of these characters to deliver a quirky, relatable and humorous representation of
unique friendships you make as a young adult. Hanna will be played by actress, Hailee Steinfeld. I
believe Steinfeld will embody the perfect combination of loveable, funny and innocence to emulate
a modern girl-next-door character that young adults can resonate with. With vast experience in
similar roles in Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) and The Edge of Seventeen (2016), Steinfeld’s long brunette
locks and cheeky smile would bring life to the character as she gives the role her own quirky edge.

The other main characters in ‘Blossom’ are Hanna’s two quirky and rather mischievous housemates
who both catalyse and comfort her rollercoaster experience. Hanna’s childhood best-friend and
perfectionist party-animal, Greta Campbell, will be played by Laura Harrier. Drawing inspiration
from her role in Hollywood (2020), Harrier exudes prim and proper to serve as a mature voice of
reason between Hanna and their other housemate, Xavier. Harrier’s past role in Spiderman:
Homecoming (2017) further perpetuates her character as the sweet, caring and perfectionist angelic
figure on Hanna’s shoulder who comforts her in times of distress.

Hanna’s other housemate, Xavier Sharpe, will be played by Miles Teller. As a computer whiz who
spends most of his time slacking off, Teller will embody the devilish character of Xavier in stark
contrast to Greta. With extensive experience with past roles in films such as Footloose (2011) and
The Spectacular Now (2013), Teller’s eccentric humour and wit will help to underpin the comedic
feel of the film. As the one who fills Hanna’s spray bottle with floor cleaner, causing her to
accidentally kill her beloved plant, Xavier exudes a childish and cheeky character. Teller is the
embodiment of this infuriatingly mischievous, yet endearing personality, as demonstrated in his
roles in That Awkward Moment (2014) and Two Night Stand (2014).

As a minor character who only really appears in selected flashbacks, Russell Crowe will portray the
role of Hanna’s father, Fred. His extensive acting experience in a myriad of various roles, combined
with his appearance as a loveable father figure ensures he is the perfect fit.

Location
The film will be shot in Melbourne, Australia due to the assorted offering of filming sites available.
The filming will predominantly take place at Docklands Studio in Melbourne, akin to several notable
films such as Mad Max (1979) and The Dressmaker (2015). Whilst the story takes place in suburban
California, the crux of the film can be shot in a hired studio lot which will easily imitate key locations
frequented in the film, such as their apartment, library, coffee shop and bar. Filming at the glorious
and lush University of Melbourne Parkville campus will use a drone to establish aerial shots that will
be used in the beginning of the film to set the scene for viewers, replicating the fictional “Radley
University.” Filming will also take place in Bulleen, Victoria to establish the suburban feel of the film
– inspirational photos are attached below.

Editing
The majority of editing in “Blossom” will be invisible continuity editing to ensure smooth and logical
coherence of scenes, enhance the dramatic effect of the film and emphasise foreshadowing scenes

(for example, Hanna reading The Year of Magical Thinking). Contrastingly, the use of intercutting
(i.e. parallel editing or cross cutting) will be used in flashbacks to guide the storyline and change
audience perception of time. Similarly, a heavily-edited montage filled with stereotypical student
studying and partying will be used at the beginning of the film to set the scene for viewers. To
maintain comedic equilibrium throughout the film, thematic fast-cutting and editing will be used to
convey a chaotic sense of liveliness, which will be then contrasted with more solemn, slow and
lingering flashback cuts to express Hanna’s innate sadness.
Sound Design
The sound of the film comprises of mostly diegetic sound through the use of character dialogue and
sounds made by objects in real life. To complement this, the use of non-diegetic sound via a
soundtrack that consists of both established and small-time artists and songs will aim to enhance
storytelling and represent Hanna’s emotions to capture the coming-of-age essence of the film. For
moments when Hanna is surrounded by friends and fun, tracks from KC and the Sunshine Band,
Grouplove, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen will be used to convey a positive, upbeat wave of
emotion for the audience, emanating a sense of nostalgia.
Conversely a party scene in the middle of the film will use more contemporary RnB tracks, whilst
times of stress and sorrow will call for acoustic versions of more modern songs to express
melancholy, featuring tracks from Cub Sport, Big Scary, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and M83.
Flashbacks of Hanna spending time with her father will incorporate the use of solemn piano music
to convey deep feelings of sadness to the audience.
In the final scene of the film, Hanna sits on her balcony with the camera closing in from over her
shoulder as she submits her final thesis with the title: “Gardening, Grief and Growth.” The
submission receipt pops up on screen as she closes her laptop and smiles. The film ends with
Enlighten Me – Grouplove (2016) (music from 0:27 - 2:05 seconds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeZ42lob5YM) playing as Greta and Xavier burst onto the
balcony. As the trio laugh, dance and drink wine in celebration, the camera aligns with Hanna’s eyes
as she looks over where the new leaf has sprouted. The screen fades to black and the music cuts as
the credits start slowly rolling along to an acoustic version of Supercut – Lorde
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bNZK-zgmUc). The stark contrast between the upbeat music
that signals acceptance with the slow sadness of the credit tracks will ensure that viewers
understand Hanna’s sense of closure whilst feeling both nostalgic and reflective.
