Assignment details:
The following essay, which should be 2000 words in length (+/- 10%), will count towards
50% of your module mark. Essays should be submitted according to the University
regulations, which include penalties for late work.
You must draw your own diagrams by hand or electronically and scan them into your word
document. Do not scan diagrams from other sources, otherwise you will be deducted marks.

Explain the economic rationale underlying the establishment of the EU’s
internal market, and suggest why the anticipated benefits have been realised
in some sectors, but not in others.

Module Learning Outcomes: This assignment tests the following module learning
outcomes:
• apply economic theory to a range of EU issues;
• critically assess theories of economic integration;
• critically evaluate economic policies of the EU;
• research EU issues by using a range of information sources and assess the
appropriateness of these sources


Grading Criteria: Your work will be assessed on the following criteria:

1st (70%+) - Excellent rather than very good when considering the students’ ability to;
construct appropriate economic arguments and reason analytically, critically consider
arguments, exercise informed and independent thought and judgment, use appropriate
economic diagrams, show a wide breadth of knowledge. Evidence of independent research,

2.1 (60%-69%) - The essay will exhibit evidence of wider reading, and clearly attempt to
answer the question using relevant material with clear evidence of independent inquiry and
critical judgment in selecting, ordering, analysing and synthesising. Inclusion of relevant
theory and its application to the EU, and answering the specific question asked, will be
rewarded. Overall, the criteria above (for a 1st) will be very good rather than excellent.

2.2 (50%-59%) - There will be relevant concepts with an attempt at analysis, but the level of
analysis will be lower than above, with more limited reading. The work will not clearly
answer the question set. Relevant theory and its application to the EU will be less evident.
For example, economic theory will not be clearly linked to the relevant EU issue or be
critically assessed, and an evaluation of EU economic policy will be limited.
Overall, the criteria above (for a 1st) will be regarded as average rather than very good.

3rd (40%-49%)- The essay will not directly answer the question, although it will contain
relevant concepts. Poor organisation and expression. Tends to be more descriptive with
weak analysis. Theory not likely to be evident.

Fail (<40%) - Unsuccessful attempt and /or incomplete exposition of the material.
