A2: Research Protocol
Topic: This research aims to investigate the influence that social media has on cultural
identity
Section 1:
Introduction
As a very effective platform, media defines our value framework, thinking method
and outlook on life. Today, the media has become a powerful tool to influence
society, not just a way of communication. There is no doubt that the media currently
plays an important role in cultural adaptation (Radwan, 2022).
The development of modern technology has produced new virtual interactive fields,
which are the result of technological development. These fields are reflected in social
networks, transforming reality into a circle full of daily development, which provides
opportunities for extensive and branched exchanges despite the distance, thus
producing new cultures different from traditional social cultures based on customs
and traditions (Zemmouri, 2011).
Differences in beliefs and backgrounds help people from different societies to
communicate and negotiate well. Cross cultural relations continue to fail because
many people are unaware of their cultural identity. The Internet and mass media have
played an important role in promoting globalization, and have had many positive
effects on different societies and ethnic cultures around the world (Ivy, 2022).
Therefore, social networks play a key role in social and interpersonal relations,
transmitting fast news, SMS, video clips and various interesting information in
people's daily life, which contributes to their widespread use, such as Facebook,
twitter and YouTube (Rabeh, 2010). Therefore, under this background, this paper is
determined to use the research method of focus groups to formulate a reasonable
research process and plan to more accurately and effectively investigate the influence
that social media has on cultural identity.
Literature Review
In order to better understand the theme and formulate the direction, we consulted the
relevant literature review. How does social media alter, differ or impact cultural
culture?
In a broad sense, the relationship between media and culture in a society is inclusive.
In this era of virtual world and easy access to information, the boundaries are
becoming thinner (Jain, 2018). According to Arnett, globalization can affect identity
in many ways, mainly because it compares itself with the social environment it
contacts (Beclilley, 2021). A study examining the consumption and use of various
media by Spanish speakers found that social media is different in that the frequency of
use of the main languages on social media platforms is significantly lower than that of
other communication channels (vel á zquez, 2017). The study may attribute this to the
perception of group inclusiveness and self-protection, especially in the online
environment dominated by English. And how these behavioral changes will affect the
long-term evolution of cultural identity, the current research is insufficient and needs
further analysis.
In addition, the impact of social media on cultural identity is also multifaceted. Social
media enhances the creativity and social awareness of our society by interacting with
others and sharing new ideas and perspectives. On the other hand, social media has
affected our culture in a negative way. People can share whatever they want on social
media, some of which may be inappropriate pictures. People have become more
conservative about each other's views. People began to debate each other's views on
politics, religion, social rights and culture (Kerem, 2016) .
According to the information about the intersection of cultural identity and social
media shared by Alexa Lamm with the Association for communication excellence via
zoom on October 21, participants shared how they used social media websites and the
multiple ways they saw / displayed their identity based on social media platforms,
which was useful. The main gains include that the language used should resonate with
our target audience in a positive way and people do not necessarily reflect their true
identities on social media (Lamm,2021). We can get inspiration from this study and
use it as a reference in the follow-up research and design of the information
investigation process.
Objectives
Our objective for the whole project is investigating the different influences of cultural
identity that social media would have on two kinds of people: social media savvy and
social media for basic.
In fact, there are complex definitions of social media culture. On the one hand, the
existing mature culture is recreated in the form of numbers on social media; on the
other hand, the dominant social media culture is itself an independent culture. Social
media is a general term for websites and applications that focus on community
communication, content sharing and mutual collaboration. (COMMENT, 2021)
Through the knowledge, beliefs and practices of people's interaction on social media,
this information may be an important factor in the reconstruction of tangible world
culture or become a unique social media culture.
Basic social media tools such as WeChat, Line and Facebook are widely used in a
variety of work communications, which is quite familiar to the community. But now
many of the working people in Australia are still using email as their main
communication method with others. This group of people don’t use social media as a
part of their entertainment. They usually believe that real life’s conversation is much
more important than the one on social media. Typically, this group uses social media
as a communication tool either because of work demands or because most people
around them do. They cannot obtain social relationships that are different from real
life acquaintances on social media, and they will be wary of strangers on the Internet
and will not communicate too deeply if they know nothing about each other. Their
cultural identity is always in their own era and will not be influenced by popular
culture on the Internet.
Due to the fact that older adults are not familiar with the popular social media culture,
it is common to see that the conversation between youths and elders cannot run
smoothly sometimes because of the cultural identity difference.
Young people will discuss the latest hot topics with each other and use Internet terms
to express their unique personalities, so as to form empathy with others in the same
cultural community. They are not only using social media as their communication
tool, they might also use them to learn things, share daily life and post their unique
ideas on the social media platforms to get followers. Especially now it is very popular
to create a unique image for yourself to run a blog, which is not only a way for young
people to entertain, it has formed a unique culture with business value, while
improving self-worth and gaining the love of netizens.
Through our initial investigation of background data, we have a preliminary
understanding of these two groups. Our research will compare participants' attitudes
towards social media cultural identity to verify whether our initial ideas about them
are correct or not. We will use a focus group to see if the social media culture
differences between them are as expected, and if we can find interesting perspectives
that can lead us to different findings.
Section 2:
Methodology
Questionnaires are written in the form of questions and information will be collected
through this form, the researchers are able to investigate the social phenomenon
through the way of social survey data collection method. By the analysis of the
collection, sorting, questionnaire answers, they can get useful information and
improve decision making.
Focus group interview method, also known as group discussion method, is to use the
form of small symposium, select a group of participants, by moderators in an
unstructured, natural form to talk with a representative group of participants, in order
to gain an in-depth understanding of the relevant issues.
The method of focus group interview can be used in the following aspects:
1) To reveal the group reaction to a certain problem or phenomenon.
2) Through interviews, hypotheses and inferences can be formed about a certain
study.
3) Improve and perfect some quantitative research methods.
4) Explain and illustrate the results of other quantitative research methods.
Recruitment and selection of participants: It usually involves stopping random people
on the high street or picking random phone numbers. The selection is to avoid
duplicate or "professional" respondents in the group. A group usually consists of eight
participants, but there is no ideal number of participants; it depends on the type of
group.
A good moderator are key factors for the success of focus group activities. Our team
members are all familiar with social media, and we will not be outsiders on this topic.
Our position determines whether we can guide them to the topic correctly.
Discussion guides are generally prepared by teamwork. The discussion guide should
ensure that all salient topics are discussed in a certain order. A discussion guide is a
summary of the topics to be covered in the group meeting. The discussion guide
prepared by the moderator generally consists of three stages: First, establish rapport,
explain the rules in the group, and bring up the individual for discussion. The second
stage is for the moderator to stimulate in-depth discussion. The third stage is to draw
important conclusions and measure the limits of trust and commitment.
Research Design
The research design for the project will be made up of several parts. After the
background research, we will be able to understand the basic situation about the
population of the social media users, and how we can find the appropriate
participants.
Therefore, we will observe relevant reports, network speeches and similar research
records during the preliminary background research, so as to formulate the next
research plan. Next, we will identify and find our target research participants through
questionnaires. In order to find suitable respondents, we will screen them according to
their answers. After determining the survey objects, we will use the focus group
research method for the next step. This form of qualitative research allows us to
obtain the participants' ideas, opinions, beliefs and attitudes in the most effective way.
They will participate in the activities designed by us, answer questions and freely talk
with other members to share their views and opinions. We will follow up the whole
process of this study and recording with the consent of both parties.
Project Management
Our research project will include about 6-8 participants, the range of age will be 20-
55. We will make sure that the number of social media savvy and social media for
basics is quite balanced because this will be easier for us to have a fair conclusion
through our research data. Maggie will create questionnaires for about 20 people to
fill in their information about the topic, which will be convenient for us to select the
appropriate participants. We will prepare a zoom meeting space for all the participants
to have free conversations about the topic, and at the same time, we will prepare a
Miro link for them to do the rest of the activities.
On the Miro board there will be four parts designed by Rainey, self-introduction,
voting, the discussion questions and conclusion about everyone’s findings through the
process of the activities. Maggie will become the host for the activities to guide them
through the whole process, Rianey will record the data during the progress of the
whole activities, using zoom recording will make sure that we won’t mistake any
conversation.
Our group members will use Miro’s counter to control the time for each part of the
activities. Good time management makes it easier to keep the process going. It
prevents excessive idle chatter and allows participants to stay focused on the topic.
Self-introduction will help the participants to know each other better before the
discussion, enabling them to have further conversations easily, without getting
embarrassed. The voting part will be using some yes or no or multiple-choice
questions to see the percentage of the agreements visually, which will help us to
collect their initial attitudes and social media habits towards the topic. Then
participants can have some time to discuss the voting results and tell us their findings.
The discussion questions will mainly be asking the details of their own cultural
identity through social media.
In the end, Maggie will ask for each participants’ conclusion for the activities and
after the activity, we will sort out and further analyze the obtained content to obtain
specific and accurate information.
