Mini-Project Guidelines
EIE 529 - Digital Image Processing, Fall 2022-23
Department of Electronic and Information Engineering,
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Objective
This mini-project aims at providing an opportunity for individual student to study a topic in digital
image processing in more depth than we would cover in the lectures.
Scope
Each student needs to select 1 paper from one of the following technical journals:
1. IEEE Transactions on Image Processing
2. IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence
3. IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging
4. IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging
5. IET Image Processing
6. ELSEVIER Pattern Recognition
7. ELSEVIER Computer Vision and Image Understanding
8. Springer International Journal of Computer Vision
The paper has to be published after January 2012 and papers from other journals will have to be
approved separately. There are 8 journals from the list and you must be able to find a paper of your
interests there. Moreover, the paper has to be directly related to digital image processing. Even
though this mini-project is based on one paper, you may mostly need to read several of its references
to understand the paper thoroughly. The key is to understand the paper and its results and then write a
report in your own words on:
• Background and motivation of the paper (15%)
• Technical contribution of the paper (15%)
• Detail description of the results and their significance (25%)
• Your comments on the paper (20%).
The report contributes to 75% of the total grade in this mini-project.
You are also required to give a presentation (~15 minutes) in the form of video recording on your mini-
project. You may consider to use the “Record Slide Show” function provided by Microsoft Power Point.
The grading of presentation will be based on the following aspects:
• Presentation slides (5%)
o It should be clean and illustrative.
• Presentation skill (20%)
o You should demonstrate your understanding of the reviewed paper.
o English speaking will also be taken into consideration.
The presentation contributes to 25% of the total grade in this mini-project. The total file size of your
presentation slides and presentation recordings should be less than 80 MB.

Timelines (Tentative):
a) Each student is required to inform the course instructor on the selected paper and write a short
paragraph (≤ 3 sentences) to demonstrate the reasons of selecting this paper before 11:59am Oct.
29 (Saturday), 2022.
b) The final report, presentation slides, and presentation recording should be submitted to Blackboard
before 11:59am Nov. 26 (Saturday), 2022.
Here is a list of potential topics for your reference:
• Image filtering, enhancement, and restoration
• Interpolation, super-resolution, and mosaicing
• Image compression, storage, transmission, and retrieval
• Motion detection and estimation
• Image registration and fusion
• Image authentication and watermarking
• Advanced methods for image segmentation
• Feature detection, extraction, and analysis
• Mathematical optimization algorithms for digital image processing
• Deep learning for digital image processing
• Applications of digital image processing to various fields (AR/VR, metaverse, biomedical,
autonomous vehicles, robotics, health, environmental monitoring, security, etc.)
• …
