Course Project
The examples of systems engineering used in industrial engineering projects, both past and
present, provide many lessons. Systems engineering case studies help the understanding of
systems engineering principles.
Goal
Study a systems engineering case and develop a better understanding of the usage of systems
engineering methods. Each student is required to submit a one-page proposal before 5PM,
September 17, 2022. The proposal should contain the student’s name and project idea. The
proposal should be submitted online.
Project deliverables
The project deliverables comprise 60% of the final grade for this course.
Mid-term Report–15%
Each student should turn in a mid-term report before 5PM, October 8, 2022. This report may
include the following contents:
 Background
 Concept development stage (needs analysis, concept exploration, concept definition)
 Challenges
The written material must be at least 10 pages of text (double-spaced).
Final report–30%
The final report may include the following contents:
 Background
 Concept development stage
 Engineering development stage
 Post-development stage
 Systems engineering challenges of the program
 Summary and lessons learned
The case study may also focus on one specific stage of the system development process and
analyze the usage of systems engineering methods to handle the challenges.
Video Presentations:
You will be asked to present their midterm and final project. The presentations aim to provide the
audience with an exciting overview of your project. Your presentation would highlight the
methodologies and key results and conclusions. The presentation can be in a powerpoint-style or
chalk-and-talk style. The midterm presentation is 15 mins, and the final presentation will be 30
mins.

You need to record your presentations and upload them to Youtube or Google Drive. You do not
have to make your video publicly accessible but make sure they are accessible to those who have
the link. The grading of the project will be based on both presentations and the reports. You need
to include the link to your presentation videos on the cover page of the reports when you submit
online.
The presentations will be 15% of your grade.
 Midterm presentation: 5%
 Final presentation: 10%
Requirements for final report
The final project report must include a reference list. The written material must be at least 30
pages of text (double-spaced). The pdf version of the project report must be handed in online
before 5PM, December 17, 2022.
