Sample 题型
Standard form & argument map —— 20 分
Assumptions —— 5 分
2. Assumption
Evaluation Premises —— 10 分
Sample, population and target property —— 10 分
1. Target property = main conclusion
2. Population > Sample
HD EDUCATION
Causal argument —— 10

Conclusion
(1) Thus
(2) Therefore
(3) Hence
HD EDUCATION
Premises
Main Conclusion
Question 1:
Economist: Some critics of the media have contended that negative news reports on the state of
the economy can actually harm the economy because such reports damage people's confidence in
it, and this lack of confidence in turn adversely affects people's willingness to spend money. But
studies show that spending trends correlate very closely with people's confidence in their own
immediate economic situations. Thus these media critics are mistaken.
答案:These media critics are mistaken / wrong.
1) Some critics of the media have contended that negative news reports on the state of the
economy can actually harm the economy because such reports damage people's confidence in it,
and
2) This lack of confidence in turn adversely affects people's willingness to spend money.
3) But studies show that spending trends correlate very closely with people's confidence in their own
immediate economic situations.
4) Thus these media critics are mistaken.
Step 3:寻找 premises & conclusion
Premises:1 - 3
Conclusion:4
1. Some critics of the media have contended that negative news reports on the state of the
economy can actually harm the economy because such reports damage people’s confidence in it.
HD EDUCATION
2. This lack of confidence in turn adversely affects people’s willingness to spend money.
3. Studies show that spending trends correlate very closely with people’s confidence in their own
immediate economic situations.
Therefore,
C. These media critics are mistaken.
Step 6: 画 argument map
Evaluation Tips:
Evaluation the truth of premises
Support
如果 premise 3 是错误的,premises not support conclusion。
Question 2:
Does the position of a car driver's seat have a significant impact on driving safety? It probably does.
Driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly. A driver who is
uncomfortable eventually becomes fatigued, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the road.
Likewise, the better the visibility from the driver's seat, the more aware the driver can be of road
conditions and other vehicles.
The position of a driver’s seat can affect safety. / The position of the driver’s seat
probably has a significant impact on driving safety.
解析:
HD EDUCATION
Step 1:
1) Does the position of a car driver's seat have a significant impact on driving safety?
2) It probably does.
3) Driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly.
4) A driver who is uncomfortable eventually becomes fatigued, and
5) Fatigue makes it difficult to concentrate on the road.
6) The better the visibility from the driver's seat, the more aware the driver can be of road conditions
and other vehicles.
Step 3:寻找 premises & conclusion
Premises:3 - 6
Conclusion:1 & 2 =》
1. A driver who is uncomfortable eventually becomes fatigued.
2. Fatigue makes it difficult to concentrate on the road.
3. The better the visibility from the driver’s seat, the more aware the driver can be of road conditions
and other vehicles.
Therefore,
4. Driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly.
Therefore,
C. The position of a car driver’s seat have a significant impact on driving safety.
Step 6: 画 argument map
HD EDUCATION
Evaluation Tips:
Evaluation the truth of premises
Support
Assumption
Premises

Argument Evaluation
Sound Argument
A sound argument is one that is not only valid, but begins with premises that are actually true.
Example 1 :
1. In some states, no felons are eligible voters, that is, eligible to vote.
2. In those states, some professional athletes are felons.
Therefore,
C. In some states, some professional athletes are not eligible voters.
HD EDUCATION
答案:
The argument is both valid and sound.
Example 2:
1. All toasters are items made of gold.
2. All items made of gold are time-travel devices.
Therefore,
C. All toasters are time-travel devices.
答案:
The argument is valid, but not sound. The premises in this argument is not true.

Validity
If all the premises were true, then the conclusion must be true.
Argument Evaluation
Question 3:
Look, think about an acorn---it grows up to be an oak tree, sure, but when it begins it's a nut, not a
tree. Same with people. A fetus grows up to be a human being, but when it begins it's just a clump
of cells and not a person.
1) Look, think about an acorn---it grows up to be an oak tree,
2) but when it begins it's a nut, not a tree.
3) Same with people.
4) A fetus grows up to be a human being, but when it begins it's just a clump of cells and not a
person.
Step 2:寻找 premises & conclusion
HD EDUCATION
Premises: 1 - 4
=》立场内部都是 co-dependent,因为需要两个一起去表达想法/观点;
1. Look, think about an acorn
2. Acorn grows up to be an oak tree, sure, but when it begins it's a nut, not a tree
3. Same with people.
4. A fetus grows up to be a human being, but when it begins it's just a clump of cells and not a
person.
Therefore,
C.Xxx (需要自己总结)
Step 5:argument map
Evaluation Tips:
Evaluation the truth of premises
Support
Premises not support conclusion.

The average life expectancy for the United States population as a whole is 73.9 years, but children
born in Hawaii will live an average of 77 years, and those born in Louisiana, 71.7 years. If a
newlywed couple from Louisiana were to begin their family in Hawaii, therefore, their children would
be expected to live longer than would be the case if the family remained in Louisiana.
Which of the following statements, if true, would most significantly strengthen the conclusion drawn
in the passage?
A. As population density increases in Hawaii, life expectancy figures for that state are likely to be
revised downward.
B. Environmental factors tending to favor longevity are abundant in Hawaii and less
numerous in Louisiana.
C. Twenty-five percent of all Louisianans who move to Hawaii live longer than 77 years.
D. Over the last decade, average life expectancy has risen at a higher rate for Louisianans than for
Hawaiians.
E. Studies show that the average life expectancy for Hawaiians who move permanently to
Louisiana is roughly equal to that of Hawaiians who remain in Hawaii.
