1. Overview

For this project, you will be assessed on:
(1.) Two written reports (Part A and Part B)
(2.) Implement a database system using Oracle in Part B
(3.) Video presentation in Part B

• The individual assignment (Part A) is worth 15% of the marks of the course.
• The team assignment is worth 30% (Part B) of the mark of the course. Part B is
to be undertaken in groups of four (three is allowed to fit everyone) students, all
of which must be from the same lab class. Further information on Part B will be
published after Week 05.
Assessment Part A is the focus of this document.

2. IMPORTANT NOTE on File-Sharing Websites – Please read
There are some file-sharing websites that specialise in buying and selling academic
work to and from university students.
You should be aware that you would be committing plagiarism if you download a
piece of work from these websites and present it as your own either wholly or
partially. For more information about Academic Integrity and Plagiarism, please click
here.
If you upload your original work to these websites, and if another student
downloads and presents it as their own either wholly or partially, you might be
found guilty of collusion — even years after graduation.

4. Aim of the Assignment

This case study (individual assignment + team assignment) addresses all the Learning
Outcomes of the course. By completing each requirement of this assignment, you will
demonstrate your mastery of the principles and practice of Business Databases:
▪ CLO1: Create and apply conceptual and relational database modelling methods.
▪ CLO2: Design, implement and evaluate database systems.
▪ CLO3: Access and manipulate a relational database using Structured Query
Language.
▪ CLO4: Collaborate with peers as a team to solve problems and achieve outcomes.
▪ CLO5: Discuss and elaborate on the privacy and security implications of Big Data
and business analytics.

The aim of the assignment is to design an Entity Relationship (ER) diagram based on
a case study. You will research and examine three objects, namely departments, nurses,
and patients in a hospital. The focus of the ERD is on the nurses. This means you will
have to research for different types of nurses and what they do. You do not have to
select all types of nurses, and all the departments. You only select the nurses you want
to focus on. You will then associate the nurses with the department they work and the
patients they care for. Alternatively, you find a department you are interested in, and
then find the types of nurses who work in the department. Either approach is acceptable.

5. Case Study

5.1 WPH Private Hospital

In the recent redevelopment project, similar to Randwick Campus Redevelopment
project (nsw.gov.au), WPH Private Hospital (a fictitious hospital) or just WPH, is in
Eastern suburbs of Sydney, built and renovated a few of its buildings. WPH has a
reputation of delivering a high standard of medical service.
You are asked by the management of WPH to provide a prototype database for WPH.
The focus of the prototype is on patients, nurses, and departments. There are many
areas you can focus on, but you were told that your objective is to build an ERD of a
data model based on these three areas:

(1) WPH is an integration of several departments, namely clinical departments,
nursing departments, supportive departments, technical departments and
administrative departments. The purposes of these departments can be found
on the website: Departments in a Hospital.

(2) There are different types of nurses working at WPH (see Types of nurses). There
are also doctors including specialists, general staff and supporting staff (such as
chef) working in WPH. However, the focus of this project is on the nurses.

(3) When registering at WPH, a patient must provide their name, date of birth,
address, other personal details, and Health fund (if any). Registration date (date
of the first contact with WPH Private Hospital) is automatically assigned. You
can assume the details of the patient either provided by the patient, or patient’s
relative or friend.

5.2 Considerations
Actions you must take when building an ERD:
(a) You start to do research on two or more of the departments.
(b) This is followed by doing further research on one or more types of nurses
working on the departments. You have to research the types of nurses who
work in a particular department, and their duties. Not all the nurses’ duties will
be captured in an entity. For example, a nurse who helps to clean a patient will
not be captured because you do not need to record a ‘nurse cleaning a patient’.
Based on your research, you can select one or more departments, and two or more
types of nurses to serve the patients. Please note that having many departments or
many types of nurses do not necessarily translate into a higher mark.

For example, The Nutrition and Dietetics department provides professional advice (see
the diagrams below) and suggests a dietary plan to the patients. The catering and food
services department will then provide meals based on the dietary plan to the patients.

Ref: Departments in a Hospital

This is a simple story you can tell the management of WPH:
A dietician from the Nutrition and Dietetics department suggests a dietary plan to
the patient. The chefs in the catering and food services department will then
prepare a meal based on the dietary plan for the patient. The chef has to order
the produces and ingredients to cook.
However, when you create an ERD, you should not create a department entity. That is
usually a big mistake made by the students. Instead, you are likely to create entities for
(1) dietary plans, (2) purchasing of produces, (3) chefs who will prepare the food, (4)
dieticians who created the dietary plans are classified as dietician employees.
Please note that nurses are not directly involved in creating the dietary plan (we
assume that is true for this case) or preparing food. Furthermore, you should not use
this given example in your assignment.

6. Tasks and Deliverables

6.1 Report A: Tasks
1. You need to create a story on how you link the three areas together (departments,
nurses and patients) to justify your prototype project.

2. You have to do research on the functions of the departments, and jobs of the nurses.
Most importantly you have to clearly identify the relationships between the
departments and nurses.

3. Create an ER diagram that provides a suitable model for the above scenario. Use
the notation of the lecture (i.e., Chen’s notation) to draw an ER model and describe
the model in terms of entities, relationships and cardinality.

4. The ER diagram should associate between the three objects, namely departments,
nurses and patients.

5. You have to create a minimum of eight entities, but you are most likely to create
more entities.

6. You must have at least one supertype and its associated subtypes.

7. You need to list reasonable assumptions that you have made to draw the ER
diagram.

8. You have to reference all the websites you used to create the entities and used in the
project.

9. Use of Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT):
- As this assessment task involves some planning or creative processes, you are
permitted to use software to generate initial ideas. However, you must develop or
edit those ideas to such a significant extent that what is submitted is your own
work, i.e., only occasional AI generated words or phrases may form part of your
final submission. It is a good idea to keep copies of the initial prompts to show
your lecturer if there is any uncertainty about the originality of your work.
- If you use ChatGPT (or any other Generative AI chatbot websites) for assistance
(per the guidelines stated above), you have to make it clear in the assumption
how you use the generated output from ChatGPT. Without clearly stating how the
output is used will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the
standard penalties.
- If the outputs of generative AI such as ChatGPT form a part of your submission, it
will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the standard
penalties, which may include 00FL, suspension and exclusion.

6.2 Format and Deliverables
For the written report of Part A, you need to consider:
• UNSW Coversheet. Submit your assignment with a signed coversheet (typed
signatures or initials are allowed). Failure to include the UNSW coversheet with
signatures/initials will lead to 5% penalty, and no marks will be released until the
coversheet is received.

• Length. The total length of the report must not exceed 1,000 words (excluding
coversheet, table of contents, references, footnotes, endnotes, including
summaries/outlines, appendices, etc.). You may be able to stay well below this limit.

• Table of Contents. Should not exceed one page, restricted to two levels of
headlines.

• Format. The style/format of the report can be as you find it appropriate and useful.
You should use headings, sub-headings, bullet points, diagrams, and tables as
appropriate. The file format of the report is only Microsoft Word.

• References. References and citations should follow either the UNSW (Harvard) or
the APA 7th citation style standard.

• Title and File Naming Convention: Your submitted file should be
“ZID_Report_A”.docx. (e.g., z1234567_Report_A.docx). Failure to use the
correct file naming will lead to a 5% penalty.

• Text inserted as pictures will NOT be marked. For example, a table cannot be
screenshotted as a picture. Only figures can be inserted as pictures.

• The clarity and readability of your diagrams are very important.

7. General Rules

7.1 Proper Academic Conduct

All assignments need to follow UNSW’s guidelines regarding proper academic
conduct. The submission of materials that are non-original or have been submitted
elsewhere will be considered plagiarism. Plagiarism is unacceptable. All instances of
plagiarism or other academic misconduct will be pursued. Plagiarism may lead to
you failing this course and may have negative consequences for your studies at
UNSW. The general UNSW guideline on academic conduct is available online.

7.2 Assignment Submission

Assignments are to be submitted via Moodle on, or better before, the due date. Late
submission of assignments is not desirable, disrupts the course timelines and is a sign
of poor time management, and will lead to reduced marks. The late submission of
assignments carries a penalty of 5% of the awarded marks for that assignment per day
of lateness (including weekends and holidays). For example, a 70 marking would be
reduced by 3.5 marks per day of lateness. An assessment will not be accepted after 5
days (120 hours) of the original deadline unless special consideration has been
approved. An assignment is considered late if the requested format, such as hard copy
or electronic copy, has not been submitted on time or where the ‘wrong’ assignment
has been submitted.

An extension of time to complete an assignment may be granted by submitting a
Special Consideration in the case of illness or misadventure. The general UNSW
guidelines for special considerations are available online:
https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/special-consideration.
