Take home exercise 1 FAQ
1. Do we have to answer all questions for each selected quote?
Yes. You need to answer all questions for each of the four quotes you select from the list of ten
quotations.
2. Should I copy the selected quotes into my submission?
Yes. As per instructions, make sure you copy the number and text of each quote into your
submission. Please highlight the selected quote in bold. Each response should immediately follow
the copied quote (unbolded).
3. When we are identifying the source, should we include the chapter title and the book
title that it comes from?
You only need to identify the full name(s) of the author or authors and the title of the text in which
it appears. If this is an article, name the title of the article. If it is a chapter in a book, name the title
of the chapter. You may provide the title of any books and the publication date, which can follow in
brackets but this information is not required. Providing additional source information, as long as it
is accurate, is not penalised.
4. I noticed an inconsistency with the publication date of the source of a quote in the
assignment. Is this the version of the reading the one I should be using?
Yes, it may be that the reading is referring to an eBook version rather than the original publication
date so use the publication date of the reading you have access to. However, the publication date
is not required in your source identification.
5. What is the argument I am taking a stance on? Is it just the quote or any argument in the
reading in which the quote appears?
The quote is not an isolated statement and relates to the main argument that the author is making
in the overall text in which the quote appears. You need to take a stance in relation to the author’s
main argument and provide reasons for your stance.
6. Do I need to include a reference list?
Yes, as per instructions, you need to include a reference list at the end of your document for all
authors cited including the authors of the quotes. Use APA 7th edition
(https://libguides.library.usyd.edu.au/citation/apa7) referencing style.
7. Will the reference list and quotations be included in the word count?
No, neither the reference list nor the selected quotes will be included in the word count.
8. Is it a requirement to include external texts/other texts, or can we just address the
quotes and the author of the quotes directly?

quotes and the author of the quotes directly?
There is no requirement to refer to additional secondary texts. All of the answers can be drawn
from the quote's source. If you do include extra sources make sure that these are referenced in
your response using in-text citations and that you include them in your reference list.
9. Should I use in-text references when I paraphrase or quote the author of the quote?
Please do not provide in-text citations when you paraphrase the author of the quote but make it
clear that you are interpreting the author's words and claims, for example: The authors main
argument in the overall text is that turkeys are green. They provide support for this claim with
reference to an original study carried out on the colour of Turkeys in different locations around the
world.
If you directly quote the author in your text (and this should be done sparingly) then you SHOULD
use speech quotes at the beginning and end of the quote and provide the page number in
brackets after the quotation e.g. (Green, p. 203)
If you refer to additional secondary sources you should use standard APA referencing style for in
text citations e.g. (Brattier, 2000) or with direct quotation (Brattier, 2000, p.3). Make sure you
provide page numbers for all direct quotes.
10. How will the referencing criterium in the rubric be assessed if I don't source any
external sources?
You are still required to include a reference list at the end of your document with references for
each of the sources of your selected quotes using APA 7th edition referencing style.
Where there is use of secondary sources in your responses we will be assessing how you have
applied the APA referencing style.
We will also be looking at application of speech quotes and in-text citations with page numbers for
any direct quotations by the author of the quoted text.
We will be looking for acknowledgement of the author's ideas in work that you paraphrase. So
even when you have put this in your own words, it is still someone else's idea. Typically, you
would acknowledge this with a citation but in this assignment, you acknowledge it by stating that
this is the author's idea.
This is explained in the FAQ, point 9 above.
