GGR360: Assignment 3 Rubric
University of Toronto, Winter 2023
This assignment asks you to make a case for a cultural landscape, beyond the Greater
Toronto Area, that is worthy of critical study by cultural geographers. Your work should
be propelled by the blending of three or more ‘cultural texts’ and three or more
secondary, scholarly sources.
Alongside an introduction and conclusion, your assignment should contain:
1. A description of the landscape (or scene-setting), presumably early in the paper.
2. A discussion of the broader factors, possibly historical, that have produced (and
continue to produce) this landscape.
3. A discussion of the landscape’s significance or meaning, particularly but not
necessarily just in a local context.
(Note, again: as the number of marks accorded to assignments increases, the division
of points into components of a rubric becomes somewhat more arbitrary, or less strict.)

Scene-setting (/5) Uses appropriate,
relevant, and
compelling language
early in the
assignment to
describe the site of
choice and detail its
key features;
transitions smoothly
to the broader
contextual argument;
where relevant,
usefully draws on
images or other
sources to assist the
scene-setting.
Good choice of site,
but the description
is a touch unfocused
or short. A source or
two to aid the
description are
present but could
be bolstered.
The reader is left
confused as to the
specifications and
elements of the site in
question; illustrative
sources are absent or
inadequately used.

Supported
argument (/15)
A creative and
compelling
interpretation of your
site, blending and
leaning on ‘cultural
texts and secondary
literature (both well-
selected) to discuss
both the wider factors
at work in the
landscape of choice
(in its production) and
its local
consequences and
significance. Based
on this combination,
you offer a convincing
case.
A thoughtful
interpretation of the
landscape’s
production and
significance –
perhaps a slightly
unsupported ‘reach’,
or imprecise in your
arguments; relies
too much on course
sources rather than
(also) drawing from
original research.
Employs poorly
chosen, unhelpful
secondary sources;
argument is too
broad or general;
secondary sources
are inadequately
used; ‘cultural texts’
are inadequately
used; the two types
of sources are not
woven together in
any way.

Prose and
Structure (/10)
Overall, artful, clear
use of language that
briefly introduces and
summarizes your
argument, skillfully
transitions to a
description of the
site, followed by a
contextualization (the
wider factors noted
above) and a focused
interpretation of the
landscape’s
consequences and
significance amid a
more local
geography, then a
succinct conclusion.
Your assignment is
reasonably well-
structured, but your
prose, especially
with respect to your
arguments, is vague
at points. Your
framing introduction
and conclusion are
too brief or vague.
Your prose
significantly impedes
understanding due to
errors and issues with
sentence and
paragraph
construction. Your
assignment is
confusingly
structured, and/or
missing key
components.
