PHCM1002: Introduction to Public Health

Assessment 3: Final Report
Length: 2000 words
Due date: 1st May 2023 by 4pm (Sydney AEST)
Weighting: 40%
Task description: For this assessment task, you must consider the role that social and
economic, ethnicity and culture, environmental, and political and behavioural factors play
on a public health problem. Below we have provided potential topics you may consider
for this assessment. However, you may also choose your own topic. If you’d like to reach
out to confirm your additional topic, please feel free to do so.
Example topics:
• Tobacco use and smoking behaviours in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
• Obesity in Australia’s paediatric population
• Cancer in ethnic minorities (you may choose a specific group and cancer type if
you wish)
Your report should include:
• A clear description of the selected health problem, including an outline of the
significance of the problem and a description of the trends in the epidemiology of
the health problem. To support this, it is recommended that you focus on a
particular country, region, or population group. You may choose from the topics
provided, however, you may also choose your own topic. Describe the health
problem or issue using published peer-reviewed literature.
• A review of the risk factors that impact the burden of the public health problem
using the determinants of health lens, including the social and economic
environment, the physical determinants and the person’s characteristics and
behaviours.
• Details about a public health activity (i.e. health legislation, health policy, health
education/promotion, healthy settings or reorienting health systems) that has
been used or is currently being used to address the health problem or a strategy
that to address the health problem
Feedback: Feedback will be provided 2 weeks after the due date
