Consulting Presentation Guide
IMPORTANT INFO
Due: Slide deck: Monday 8th May, 5PM via Canvas
Presentation: during your week 11 Workshop.
ULOs assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Length: 15-minute presentation + accompanying slide deck
Weight: 35% (30% presentation + side deck; 5% individual component)
Description
By week 5 of the unit, you will be assigned to an Entrepreneurship Consultancy team. Your EC
team will be assigned to one of the four emerging sub-topics of entrepreneurship:
- Sustainable Entrepreneurship
- Technology Entrepreneurship
- Medical Entrepreneurship
- Social and Cultural Entrepreneurship
Next, your EC team will identify an individual or organisation aligned with the topic you are
assigned to that is currently developing and championing an emerging innovation in that
sector. You have latitude to choose an individual or organisation from the private, public, or
not-for-profit sectors. You will need to be entrepreneurial in identifying a ‘client’ for your
consulting services, and you should choose an individual or organisation for which you can
access the information you need, be it from public sources or a direct connection. If you choose
to focus on a particular organisation, it needs to have been established within the last 10
years.
You will place yourselves in the position of consultants to the individual or organisation, who
have asked for your advice on what they need to do in the next 5 years to be successful in
achieving their purpose. You will provide specific and concrete (as opposed to generic and
abstract) recommendations to them that draw upon and illustrate your mastery of concepts
from the unit.
a) Briefly explain the entrepreneurship topic you have been assigned to and why it is
important.
b) Briefly introduce your chosen individual/organisation and its purpose or mission, as
well as the emerging innovation it is developing and championing. How does this
innovation align with your assigned topic?
c) Using concepts from the unit, describe the individual/organisation’s current situation,
i.e., where they are in their innovation and/or entrepreneurship process, and present a
few key highlights of how they got there.
2
d) Using concepts from the unit, describe the most pressing issues facing the
individual/organisation at this current point in time. Why are these issues significant?
e) Using relevant concepts from the unit, present a series of implementable
recommendations and a credible, structured plan of work for the next 5 years. The
recommendations and plan of work need to be justified, i.e., you should explain how
they address the individual/organisation’s most pressing issues and move it significantly
towards achieving its purpose, using concepts from the unit.
f) Provide a set of Appendices with details of the sources of any factual information you
draw upon, i.e., a bibliography; as well as additional, relevant information that clearly
supports or provides more detail for the information presented in (a) to (e). You must
provide appropriate referencing of any data sources or quotes, using APA style 7.
Format and style guide
You are free to prepare the presentation slide deck using software of your choice (e.g.,
PowerPoint, Prezi) but the copy you submit via Canvas in advance of your presentation must
be a pdf file; and it is your responsibility to ensure that the software works during your live
presentation.
Your presentation slide deck should include the following discrete sections:
a) The entrepreneurship topic.
b) Your ‘client’ individual/organisation and associated innovation.
c) The current situation of the client, i.e., where they are in their entrepreneurship process and
how they got there.
d) Most pressing issues facing the client.
e) Your recommendations and plan of work for the client.
f) Appendices (NOTE: these slides are not presented but are included in the slide deck you
would give to the client and, therefore, the slide deck you will upload to Canvas).
These sections should be linked together so the presentation is integrated and coherent, with
compelling analytical arguments that lead to your conclusions.
Please remember the purpose of the assignment, which is to provide you with an opportunity
to demonstrate to the teaching team that you have mastered the conceptual material of the
unit by applying it to an empirical example and drawing meaningful conclusions. With this
specific assignment, you have lots of discretion to choose your own empirical example, so it is
important to choose one for which you can access sufficient information (and reference its
sources).
Presentation
All members of your team are required to contribute substantially to the content and
preparation of the presentation. For delivery of the presentation, however, not all team
members are required to present. Whether you have one, two, more or all team members
present is your choice. Do not exceed the time limit, which represents the UPPER BOUND. Once
your reach it, the presentation will be stopped even if you have slides remaining.
3
During the Question and Answer (Q/A) session, however, it is expected that all team members
– even those who do not present – will participate.
Your presentation is expected to be creative, professional, and polished. Imagine you are
presenting to representatives of your ‘client’, who are professionals with limited time and
resources. You must be concise and direct. Your stage presence, articulateness, and ability to
back up your statements are essential for a successful presentation.
