This individual assessment task is designed to test a student’s achievement of learning
objectives 1–6. The total mark is 30 marks (weight: 20% of total assessment). Word limit:
1,500 words (±10%), excluding tables, graphs and references.

Topic: Essay on Banks’ Liquidity and Funding Management
Question 1: “Liquidity and funding management is vital for both banking institutions and
non-financial firms, but even more so for banks.” Do you agree with this statement? Support
your arguments with two (2) real-life examples. (7 marks)
Guide: 400 words.
Question 2:
(A) Choose one (1) measure of asset liquidity and one (1) measure of liability liquidity and
justify why you have chosen these specific ratios to assess a bank’s liquidity and
funding position. (3 marks)
(B) Find annual bank data (2017-2022) to calculate these two ratios for the top four
Australian banks, and construct two (2) graphs (one for each ratio). NOTE: All your
raw dollar figures, calculated ratios, and relevant formulas/workings must be tabulated
and placed alongside the main discussion. Your graphs must be placed underneath the
data table. (4 marks)
(C) Conduct trend and peer analyses based on your graphs. (4 marks)

Question 3: Do you think the Australian major banks have responded appropriately to the
liquidity/funding pressure during the 2017-2022 period? Evidence your arguments with one
specific liquidity/funding management policy undertaken by each of these banks. Your
answer must evaluate the effectiveness of each of the four (4) policies and how it contributes
to the empirical peer/trend observations discussed in 2(C). (10 marks)

Introduction and Conclusion (2 marks): Approximately 200 words are recommended for
introduction and conclusion together. Subheadings should be used to separate the three
questions and different sections.

email must be sent from your Monash student email address. Any other email addresses will
not be accepted.

Submission date and time
The due date of the assignment is Friday 5th May 2023, before 4:30PM (Week 9).
All assignments must be submitted online via Turnitin (link to be posted under the
“Individual Assignment” section on Moodle).
Online submission: The online submission via Turnitin has TWO parts,
• PART 1 for the completed individual assignment coversheet file (template available
on Moodle), and
• PART 2 for the individual assignment (essay) file (.docx).
Part 2 of the submission must be a .docx file (other file formats may not be compatible for
Turnitin). The name of your .docx file should conform to the following format:
S12023 – Your First name and Last name and Student ID - Tutorial day and time –
Your tutor’s First name and Last name.
For example: S12023 – Jane Smith 1234567 – Tuesday 10AM – Glenn Emery
IMPORTANT: You are allowed to resubmit your assignment via Turnitin as often as you
wish until the assignment due date. A similarity report of below 20% is acceptable, anything
above will be investigated, penalised, or failed depending on the nature of similarity.
Students who use Apple MacBook to prepare their assignment must convert their final
.pages file to .docx before submission. Otherwise, pages. files cannot be read by Turnitin and
will not be accepted for grading.

Conditions for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)
Generative AI tools are restricted for certain functions in this assessment task. ChatGPT or
other AI tools may be used for study purposes and to learn about your topic, but you may
NOT include any AI-generated materials in the final submission. Copying and pasting AI-
generated text (and then editing) is NOT permitted. Any use of generative AI must be
appropriately acknowledged (see Learn HQ).
IMPORTANT: It is a student’s responsibility to fact-check and critically evaluate AI tools’
trustworthiness. These tools can compromise your privacy, security, creativity, intellectual
abilities, and should be used carefully.

Penalty for late lodgement
Unless an extension or special consideration has been granted, or otherwise specified in the
learning management system, students who submit an assessment task after the due date will

receive a late-submission penalty of 10 per cent of the available marks in that task. A further
penalty of 10 per cent of the available marks will be applied for each additional day (24-hour
period), or part thereof, the assessment task is overdue.
LATE submission: Late assignments must also be submitted via the same Turnitin link. No
hard copies will be accepted. Late penalties are based on the submission time recorded on
Moodle. Tasks submitted more than seven days after the due date will receive a mark of
