Assignment 3 Details and Support
Assignment 3 (Individual Reflections)
Background
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Assignment 3 allows students to undertake an ongoing reflective piece of work. This is termed a Journal of Reflection (JOR). "The most useful
reflection involves the conscious consideration and analysis of beliefs and actions for learning. Reflection allows the brain to pause amidst the
chaos, untangle and sort through observations and experiences, consider multiple possible interpretations, and create meaning"
(https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/46913/files/27509152?wrap=1) ).
Brief
The JOR is the sort of work you might do when you are having your morning coffee or tea. The important thing is that you do it at regular intervals,
making sure to get it all down in writing while maintaining positivity and lack of judgment. It is crucial that you feel satisfied that you are gathering
your thoughts, experiences, and developments effectively.
There are several reasons to write a reflective journal:
To understand the things that have happened and why they happened (e.g., you experienced something or created something and want to reflect
on the event by drawing on creative and analytical concepts).
To align future actions with the values and lessons you learned from your past reflections (e.g., you made some inroads into understanding some
new ways of thinking for your assignments).
To share and get your thoughts and ideas on paper (e.g., you had a "light bulb" moment and want to write this down).
To summarise and make your connections on the contents covered in BUSS5221.
The reflective journal will be: 1) an overall reflection for creativity on what it means for you and; 2) an overall reflection for analytics and what it
means for you. Reflections are not summaries of the content. You will find the resources available below helpful in structuring your reflection.

Suggested Format of JOR
Weekly, you will see that we have set up a Module page to enter your reflections (see for example Module 1.7). This is your personal space.
However, this will not be graded. You will also notice several reflective activities (e.g., 1.4, 2.3, 2.5, etc.). You will also see that there is a space
where you can type your response. Please note that the reflections typed into this space are not saved. Please keep a copy of these
reflections for your own record. That is, you cannot come back to the canvas page (e.g., 1.4) and see your responses.
Assignment 3 (Creative and Analytical Reflection) will have a 1500 word limit each (you have an additional 150 words each for Assignment 3 under
the Business School Policy). You will find resources below that will help you structure your JOR. Additionally, students will see a document detailing
how you can structure your JOR and a scaffolded list of weekly topics to consider for their JOR.
Assignment 3 has 2 parts of submission. Since only the video submission is graded, please bear in mind that transferring 1650 words of reflection
to a video that has a 4 mins time limit is going to be not a good practice as your audience will be reading all the words rather than actually listening
to your video. So our suggestion is to keep your written words succinct in both the word document and in the video.
Assignment 3 format:
Type up your reflection and submit this (in the template provided below) as a word document. Please note that this will not be graded but it is a
requirement of Assignment 3.
Transfer your reflection (it must be exactly the same as your typed reflection) to say MS-Powerpoint. Provide a 2 min recorded video with your
overall reflection on your creative journey and another 2 mins of recorded video (in the same video) with your overall reflection on your analytical
journey (a total of 4 mins. Your have a buffer of 24 seconds under the business school policy). For Assignment 3:
You will be providing a half an A4 page of a creative tool (eg. mind map) that encapsulates your creative journey in BUSS5221 and another It
is essential that you explain how this creative tool (e.g. mind map) has helped you with your reflection in BUSS5221. The last 30 seconds of
your video (i.e. 1min 30 seconds to 2mins) must be dedicated to your creative tool (e.g. mind map). You must outline why the creative tool
helps you with your reflection of your creative journey. Please note that this will be graded.
You will also be providing half an A4 page visualisation (e.g., pie chart) that encapsulates your analytic journey in BUSS5221. It is essential
that you explain how this analytic tool (e.g. pie chart) has helped you with your reflection in BUSS5221. The last 30 seconds of your video (i.e.

1min 30 seconds to 2mins) must be dedicated to your analytic tool (e.g. pie chart ). You must outline why the analytic tool helps you with your
reflection of your analytic journey. Please note that this will be graded.
In both of the above, you need to demonstrate Fluency, Originality, Flexibility, and Elaboration (recall Module 5.1) for all the above.

The videos need to be .mp4 format which is smaller than 500MB, You are welcome to use MS-powerpoint, for example.
You must include references (APA-7 Format) if you have used sources other than your own original thoughts.
You must include yourself talking (audio and video of yourself) in the recording. Please see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8u_QDZLqMs

Important Things to Note
There are 2 submissions required for Assignment 3.
All relevant sources must be in English and accessible by staff.
Please be aware of collusion and plagiarism guidelines - these are extremely important and carry severe penalties at the University of Sydney
Business School.
Your workshop facilitator will be the first point of contact to seek assistance. Please review staff details - staff details
(https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/46913/pages/teaching-staff?module_item_id=1751221) and book a time with your workshop facilitator. Your
workshop facilitator can only provide general help. Please note that your assignment will be randomly assigned and marked by a marker
who will not be your workshop facilitator.
You must submit a word document (not a PDF) as detailed above and a video for Assignment 3.
You will notice a 'References 5%' in the marking rubrics for this assignment. More than one error and your mark reverts to zero for Referencing
for that assignment. That is, say for Assignment 1, if you make more than 1 error in in‐text citations or end-of-document references, your mark
will revert to zero for referencing (out of 5) for Assignment 1. You, therefore, have to take particular care when doing all referencing for all your
assignments.
You cannot use text and other material that you have submitted for other assignments (in any unit) for this assignment. This constitutes
plagiarism and attracts severe penalties at the Business School. For example, for 'Preliminaries' for Assignment 2, you cannot copy and paste
your earlier work in Assignment 1. Additionally, the focus of Assignment 2 is very different to that of Assignment 1.
For Assignment 3, you must show at least 3 references to support your reflections.
You must demonstrate that you have used the material that we have covered in BUSS5221 in all your assignments in BUSS5221.
Assignment 3 FAQ - This will be populated on an on-going basis. Please visit this section regularly.
Question: Do I need to reflect every week? And how many words should I reflect every week?
Answer: Yes you should reflect every week. Reflection is a very important part of active learning where you process the content that we cover in
class and personalise this to make sense of the content. Now importantly for Assignment 3, you don't need to submit all your reflections. You
should first either combine these reflections or choose one (or two) reflections and detail why this helps you to successfully reflect on the creative
(and analytics) content in BUSS5221. The reflection for Creativity should be an overall reflection of creativity and for Analytics should be an overall
reflection of analytics. These should not be summaries of the content.
Question: Confirming that the reflections at the end of each module are not marked; and when we go to write our reflection in assignment 3, we
don’t need to use the identical reflection? I.e. presumably as our understanding and thinking through the progression of the course evolves we are
able to make other reflections rather than those we submit in 1.8, 2.8 etc.?
Answer: You don't need to use the identical reflection for Assignment 3 and as you have highlighted, the module reflections allow you to chart your
progress through this unit. The reflections within and at the end of each module will help you with Assignment 3 for this reason.

Question: Can I use informal language in Assignment 3?
Answer: You must use academic language for all assignments in BUSS5221.
Question: How do i use my 1500 words when it is a 4 (buffer of 24 seconds presentation)?
Answer: You do not need to use 750 words. The word document must detail exactly the same words that go into your powerpoint presentation.
Since the presentation is only 4 minutes, most likely, you will only need to indicate talking points (maybe around 200-300 words) in your presentation
as you can't cover 1500 words in a 4 minute presentation. So in summary, please do this:
1) Prepare your powerpoint presentation
2) Copy and paste the text in your powerpoint presentation onto MS-word
3) Do a video of your presentation following the guidelines mentioned in this page as well as Assignment 3 submission point
To repeat, you do not need to use 1500 words. You do not need to write down all the words that you are going to talk in the MS-word. All that is
required is the words in your powerpoint (say, you use dot points) must be copied and pasted into MS-word. So say in Slide 1, I have 3 dot points.
Copy and paste this into MS-Word. In Slide 2, I have 1 paragraph. Copy and paste Slide 2 into MS-word. As long as all your words in all your
slides are in the MS-word document, you will have fulfilled the assignment requirement to have identical powerpoint and word texts.
Question: Will I be penalised for writing fewer than 1500 words? Is there a minimum number of words?
Answer: No you will not be penalised for writing fewer than 1500 words. There is no minimum number of words required for Assignment 3.

Question: Do i need to reflect every week and write this in the journal?
Answer: As stated above "The reflective journal will be: 1) an overall reflection for creativity on what it means for you and; 2) an overall reflection
for analytics and what it means for you". Consider if one or more of the weeks enable you to undertake the overall reflection of creativity as
required for this assignment. An overall reflection is one that allows you to demonstrate through your own words that you have used and
personalised BUS5221 content in your everyday life. If you feel that say Week 1 and Week 5 BUSS5221 content combined together helped you
undertake the overall reflection, then combine these to provide an overall reflection. The marking rubrics indicates how you are being evaluated
and so use the marking rubrics as a guide to structuring your reflections. You do not show us your weekly reflections. Remember that this task is
you showing your 'overall' reflection of creativity.
Question: Do i need to write down (in the word document) whatever I am going to speak which are not in your powerpoint slides.
Answer: Please see FAQs. You are only required to write down what you have in your powerpoint slides in the MS-word.
Question: Can you give me an example of a creative tool?
Answer: This assignment requires you to put forward a creative tool that has allowed you to use and personalise BUSS5221 content. The
suggestion given above is a mind map. There are lots of other creative tools that you can use from a simple graph to an infograph for example. Let
your imagination take flight.
Question: What if I have only 50 words in my powerpoint slides?
Answer: Copy these 50 words to MS-word. Then in the video, provide additional information.
Question: Does the creative tool count as one visualisation?
Answer: For Assignment 3, please see - Specific Requirements for all Assignments in BUSS5221
(https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/46913/pages/specific-requirements-for-all-assignments-in-buss5221)
Question: Does the creative tool can be used to analyze past experiences or escape future potential issues?”
Answer: The creative tool helps you to reflect on your creative journey in the first 6 weeks of the creativity component of this unit. It can be a tool
that you have used in the past that has helped you presently in your creative journey. It can also be a tool that you have developed to keep
progressing on your creative journey.

https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/46913/pages/assignment-3-details-and-support?module_item_id=1751232 5/6
Question: I was wondering if we were able to use the same question provided in the workshop example, specifically week 1 where we were asked
"Am I creative?". Would we be penalized for the lack of originality? I would also like to ask if we would be marked lower for using a mind map as our
creative tool due to the same reasoning?
Answer: Ass 3 requires the use of the creative tool in our creative journey. If you feel that the mind map and am I creative question has helped you,
you are welcome to use this. Everyone's journey is different and so make sure you personalise the reflection. Ensure that it is an overall journey –
not week 1, week 2 etc journey.
Question: I am confused about whether the length of the video must be 4 minutes. It is quite hard to record a video for exactly 4 minutes. Is there
any policy for the length of video such as +/-10% that is acceptable?
Answer: Under the business school policy, you are allowed a buffer of 24 seconds.
Question: Is the purpose of the creative tool to summarise weekly lecture/content or is the creative tool one that can be adapted according to my
reflections?
Answer: Imagine that you do not have the first 1min 30 seconds in your powerpoint. Imagine that you can only have 30 seconds to reflect using a
visualisation (the visualisation can have words). The visualisation must capture your creative journey in the first 6 weeks. This is not a summary.
You must personalise the creative tool to your own needs, that is, the creative tool has actually helped you to connect with the content in the first six
weeks. Please ensure that you read all the requirements of the assignment - i.e. first 1min 30seconds details your reflection and 30 seconds details
your creative tool. As you can see in the marking rubrics, the key to doing well in Assignment 3 is to personalise the reflections and not provide
summaries. Personalising means that you need to tell us about you using the, for example, BUSS5221 (content and not just about the BUSS5221
content.
Question: Should I use the template in the word document as it include my SID?
Answer: The word document is not marked. Please use the template provided.
Question: Should I include the word length and option in the footer in the powerpoint slides?
Answer: Yes - please read the requirements above carefully.
Question: What is an analytic tool?
Answer: Similar to the creative tool, the analytic tool is something that helps you with your analytic content reflection. So say I collected some data
in response to an event that has happened to me personally. I reflect on this event using the template provided in BUSS5221 Assignment 3 Canvas
page. In particular, I did some descriptive statistics to better understand the event. I then provide a visualisation (i.e. an analytic tool - see Canvas
Modules 8 to 12 to see what tools we have used in pursuit of an analytical mindset), provide interpretation of data that helps me to make sense of
this. My analytic journey consisted of ......... My analytic tool helps me to encapsulate this analytic journey. (P.S. copying this in your reflection will
constitute plagarism). Please personalise your reflection and ensure that you choose an appropriate analysis, interpretation and visualisation
Question: Do we have to make the tool ourselves or can we use a tool from research? Is it suitable to reflect on an experience from the workplace
and utilise an analytic tool to help explain why this occurred?
Answer: You can use a pre-existing tool and adapt it to your personal reflection. As long as the reflection is personalised as opposed to a summary
of the content, you will be fine.
Question: Based on my understandings, Assignment 3 is a personalised reflection which we link what we have learnt to our own work/life. The
instruction indicates that we need to provide at least 3 references. Since it is a personalised reflection, does it mean that we need to reference
across the specific Module contents that we refer to in our reflections?
Answer: As an example (please do not use this example in your reflections), I came across a work of art in the street and I wanted to better
understand the technique that has been applied to the art. I undertook a search online and found that it was Renaissance art (Insert Reference Here
for example, Cartwright, 2010). It is thus possible to draw on references both within the unit and external to the unit to support your reflections.
Question: I want to make sure that the two diagrams that introduce our way of thinking take up about half the size of A4 paper. Does this mean that
the size of the chart is half of A4 or that the content of the chart is half of A4? Also, can we use the diagrams provided in the module to introduce the
mindset? Or can we just make our own and introduce it? Thanks!

Answer: The chart should occupy half the size of A4 paper (in your word document). You can copy and paste (or do a screenshot) of the
creative/analytical tool in your video slides. You can adapt (as in changing some of the contents of an existing tool) or make up your own tool.
Question: Can I use 'first person' reflection for Assignment 3?
Answer: Since Assignment 3 is a personal reflection, yes you can use 'I' to reflect in your video submission.
