Case Challenge Slide Pack
Assignment type: Group
Due Date: 21 May (Sunday- 6 PM)
Weight: 30%
Expected length: 4000 words maximum
Purpose of Task
The purpose of the Case Challenge is to provide you an opportunity to make sound judgements
about a real-life business opportunity or problem, by gathering information, identifying alternatives,
weighing evidence, choosing and suggesting the best course of action for the organisation. You will
draft a professional consulting report, with an accompanying slide pack.
The Challenge
This Semester we are looking at the challenge of expanding a relatively young business. Each of the
firms you can choose between has an innovative idea, sometimes based around technology,
sometimes looking to shift consumers’ behaviour. Your challenge is to recommend to one of these
firms an action, in one or more functional areas that you believe will greatly assist their business to
grow and become more competitive. The time window for implementing this recommended action
should be over the next 12-18 months.
The Organisations
The firms to choose between are:
1. Evee (https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics/936465) , an Australian
start-up where consumers can rent electric cars.
2. Good-Edi (https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics/936466) , a
Melbourne-based start-up selling edible coffee cups.
3. Restoplus (https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics/936468) , an
Adelaide-based start-up offering an all-in-one interface for cafes and restaurants.
4. Trace (https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics/936469) , an Australian
start-up which assists small and medium-sized businesses measures to offset their carbon

footprints.
The Functional Areas
1. Operations (e.g. how and where the organisation's product/service is ‘produced’, the inputs used,
the distribution channels, logistics and warehousing/inventory management)
2. Marketing (e.g. how the benefits/features of product/service are communicated to customers,
how segmentation, targeting and positioning are affected, where it is sold, pricing strategy trade-
offs required, engagement with stakeholders including government and media etc, new
product/service/process development, how customer service technologies and service employee
engagement are impacted)
3. Management (e.g.. how people within the firm are employed, the skills required, structure of the
organisation and/or board, ownership relationships)
The Intended Audience
Your audience here is the CEO/Board of your specific organisation.
Take Your Pick/Choose Your adventure
You can pick any one of these organisations. By the start of Week 9, you need to confirm with
your class convenor which organisation you are doing.
Note: Your final decisions on the functional focus can be revealed in the final submitted document (or,
actually, during your Week 11 prefesentation).
A Few Things to Kick You Off
We have created Discussion Boards for each organisation, with links to articles in the press, the
company website, and other interviews. These are a starting point, as we expect considerably more
data gathering (https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/modules/831594) and analysis.
Please DO NOT contact the firms themselves for information. These firms are small and busy and are
not aware we have set them for the assignment. They do not have time to respond to your emails,
and we do not want you using the information they might give you. Please use data you can find in
the public domain. We urge you to think about their competitive context, who they offering
products/services to, and where the biggest threats and opportunities lie.
Please make use of tools from across this semester (including these
(https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/modules/831581) ) and your broader studies in the
BCom. Explicitly incorporate at least one decision framework from the Cracked It!
(https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-89375-4) book. Think about how you can:
make sense of the current competitive environment including any emergent trends which may be
opportunities or challenges
systematically examine the firm’s advantages (and weaknesses)
devise and distinguish possible courses of action
weigh up the merits of specific choices
make your case persuasively
back each of these elements up with relevant and convincing data.

Please utilise the firm-specific Discussion Boards
(https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics) to ask questions about the
organisation. Head to the Case Challenge discussion board
(https://canvas.lms.unimelb.edu.au/courses/151034/discussion_topics/936481) for questions about the
task, analytical tools and data sources.
Format
All teams must submit a professional consulting report of nor more than 4000 words. Do NOT
exceed the word limit, as any content beyond the 4000 words will simply not be read. Please state an
accurate word count on the first page. The word count should include all table or figure content (but
not the information on the cover page, the executive summary, the bibliography, or in the slide pack).
Please use a 12point font and at least 1.5x spacing.
The submission should be written as a clear, concise business document, using full sentences (dot
points can be used only to list ideas and/or issues that you will explain). Bold, italics, and underline
could be used to emphasise an important point. Please include an executive summary of no more
than 100 words.
The document should be professionally presented and well structured, including relevant headings
and subheadings. There is no particular structure to the consulting report as different judgements
might require different structures.
All sources used must be referenced. This is particularly important for data sources (as your client
would need to be able to verify the data). Please use the APA system. The library has prepared a
website to help students correctly reference: https://library.unimelb.edu.au/recite
(https://library.unimelb.edu.au/recite)
As an appendix to the consulting report, please also include a slide pack (i.e. Powerpoint slides or
equivalent), showcasing the key points from your report, as if you were going to make a 10-minute
presentation to the client (so no more than 15 slides). Please consider the persuasiveness and the
clarity of the pack. There should be no ideas/arguments in the pack that are not in the report, but also
the pack will most likely need to cherry pick from among the arguments and analysis in the much
lengthier report. Please feel free to use visuals to capture/communicate your ideas. Avoid text-heavy
slides, as we are looking to the slide pack as an alternative communication tool.
In Week 11's workshop you will get to present a brief summary of where you are up to on your work
so as to get feedback from classmates and us. This presentation is NOT marked.

The submission cover sheet should include:
• Your team name (Feel free to be creative but professional. What would you like your consulting firm
to be called? Puns are always fun).
• All team members’ names and student IDs
• An accurate word count (not include the cover page, the bibliography, or the slide pack, but including
any table and figure content).
