GUIDELINES ASSIGNMENT 3: REFLECTIVE ESSAY
The essay is an individual assessment item and accounts for 20% of your total subject mark. Its primary
purpose is to get you to reflect on your learning experiences in Global Strategy.
Content: The essay consists of two parts -- a review of, and your reflections on, a chosen theory,
framework or concept. The two parts should be roughly equal in length (and are weighted equally).
Initially, pick a single theory, framework or concept (TFC) that you encountered in Global Strategy.1
This may be a TFC that we covered in the lecture and/or readings, or an outside TFC that you
incorporated or tried to incorporate into Assignments 1 or 2.2 Your choice of TFC does not need
instructor approval, as long as it fits these requirements.
Your learning experience with the chosen TFC may have been a positive one and, in the process of
familiarising yourself with it, you got to fully appreciate its value. Alternatively, your encounter with
the chosen TFC may have been deeply frustrating, leading you to view it as flawed or inadequate. Both
these scenarios allow for ample reflection.
The review requires that you briefly describe the chosen TFC in your own words (no more than one
third of this part’s word count) before summarising others’ assessment of it. The latter requires you to
engage in a bit of research to provide an overview of researchers’ and, where applicable, practitioners’
arguments regarding the merit of the TFC in understanding international business affairs.3
The reflection requires you to critically reflect on the value of your chosen TFC as a tool for
understanding international business affairs and asks you to generate your own insights. Your
reflections on the TFC may, for instance, uncover limitations or benefits that have been overlooked by
others; they may discuss credible improvements or extensions; or provide insights how/where the
TFC is best applied or what contexts it is unsuitable for. Make sure to illustrate your specific arguments,
for instance by documenting your struggles to apply the TFC in the context of Assignment 1; by
highlighting the specific issues discovered through utilising the TFC while working on Assignment 2;
or by referring to specific examples / experiences in support of your arguments. Your arguments may
build on issues identified in your review or they may be completely new arguments. Importantly, they
must contain your own insights.
Reflection requires you to think deeply about the TFC and your use of it. The following questions may
assist you in prompting your reflection: Did the TFC help me in understanding / analysing a particular
issue? If so, how did it inform my understanding / analysis of the issue? In the process of applying the TFC,
what did I learn about it? Did I encounter particular challenges in applying the TFC? Does the TFC come
with a particular set of assumptions (which may or may not hold across all contexts)?
1 Tip: when choosing a concept, aim for a non-trivial concept with an adequate level of complexity (e.g.
concepts such as liability of distance, cultural distance, corporate social responsibility), thereby facilitating
review and reflection. Frameworks and theories invariably offer adequate complexity.
2 Most likely, your chosen TFC ended up in your Assignments 1 or 2. Alternatively, you may have tried to
use it but ultimately abandoned it because (i) you struggled to apply it or (ii) it failed to provide meaningful
insights and you replaced it with something else. Both these scenarios provide a fertile ground for reflection.
3 You might be lucky and find a review article dedicated to your chosen TFC. In that case it is not enough to
simply repeat that particular article’s arguments (appropriately referenced) and present them as your
overview. You would need to look for additional sources so as to present your own overview of literature.
2
Keep your introduction and conclusion succinct (no more than 100 words each). All you need to
introduce your TFC are a few sentences telling the reader why you chose the TFC and where you
encountered / used it. The conclusion simply requires a few sentences summarising the main findings
of your review and reflection.
Further Instructions:
The essay must be no more than 2,000 words in length. (Excess word count penalties apply.) Any
tables/figures in your report do form part of your word count, as do in-text citations. Your cover page
and bibliography do not form part of your word count.
Since your reflections contain your own insights into the chosen TFC, feel free to write in the first
person (e.g. “Based on my use of the framework I believe it is…”).
Ensure that your essay has a logical flow and makes use of relevant (sub)headings where appropriate.
Clarity of expression, grammar and overall coherence form part of the assessment. Students who may
have difficulty in this regard are encouraged to utilise the services provided by the Academic Skills
Unit: https://students.unimelb.edu.au/academic-skills/one-on-one-advice#itutes
Refrain from using artificial intelligence software in the preparation of this assignment:

technologies
Make sure to acknowledge your sources. (The issue of plagiarism is covered in the subject outline.)
There is no need to reference your own Assignments 1 and 2; with GS lecture slides an in-text
reference such as “GS Seminar Week4” is sufficient. Use the APA System of referencing as detailed in
the following Library guide: https://library.unimelb.edu.au/recite/referencing-styles/apa7
Please use a 12-point font with 1.5x line spacing, and insert page numbers.
On the cover page, list your name, student number and accurate word count.
Please submit via LMS > Assignments by June 11, 17:00. Late submissions, unless cleared with your
instructor, will attract a penalty of 10% (of the total mark available) per day.
The following informal marking rubric provides further upfront guidance regarding expectations. Once
completed, the rubric will give you a quick overview of the criteria your assignment ticked more/less
convincingly, thereby complementing the commentary explaining your assignment mark.
