Instructions 1. Read the Boeing 737 MAX: What Response Strategy is Needed
to Ensure Passenger Safety and Restore the Company’s
Reputation? case study material on Moodle and consider the five
(5) related questions on page two (2) of this document.

2. Your responses to the five given questions should form the
body of a report. Submit your answers as a single document using
report format and paragraph structure – no dot points. Considering
each question, choose a subheading for your response to each
question, in the order the questions have been given. Make sure that
each answer responds to the relevant question.

3. Each response needs to be between 300-350 words and
allocate 150-200 words to the introduction and 200-250 words to
the conclusion of the report. Your overall report should be 2000
words (+/- 10%), including the in-text citations but excluding the
reference list and appendix. Provide a word count at the end of
each answer (sub section). Any diagrams, figures and additional
information should be included as an appendix.

4. Use the prescribed textbook for the subject, recent peer
reviewed journal articles (a minimum of 5 scholarly articles, 2016
and later, in addition to the textbook), the company’s website and
other reliable resources to support your views in analysing and
evaluating the case study.

5. Make sure to use the UOW Harvard Referencing style and
include: (a) in-text citations in your answers (sub sections) and (b)
a reference list at the end of your report.

6. Safeguard the academic integrity of your report by following
good academic practices and reviewing and ensuring that your
overall Turnitin similarity score is as low as possible. Avoid
plagiarism at any cost. Avoid using direct quotes from the
textbook, journal articles, or websites. Read the information,
interpret the key ideas, and use your own voice to paraphrase
these key ideas.

7. Submit your work as a single MS Word document, Arial or Times
New Roman style, Font size 12, 1.5 line spacing and 2.5 cm margin
on each side via Turnitin. Submission deadline is 16th June 2023,
10:00am.

8. Please note that your report should be analytical, rather than
descriptive.

(Autumn 2023)


1. With reference to the PESTEL framework discussed in Thompson et al. (2022), conduct an
analysis of Boeing’s macro-environment. Based on your analysis, critically discuss which factor(s)
have emerged as important trends that should shape Boeing’s strategy into the future.
2. With reference to SWOT framework as discussed in Thompson et a. (2022), identify the major
elements of SWOT for Boeing 737 MAX. Based on the SWOT analysis, what conclusions do you
draw and what should Boeing’s senior management and leadership do to improve Boeing 737
MAX and the company’s strategy in general?
3. With reference to Porter’s five generic competitive strategies (Thompson et al. 2022), which of
the five generic strategies best describes Boeing’s strategy and why? Discuss what the company
does to make sure its strategy works. Analyse the sustainability of the company’s strategy.
4. Based on the five components of a socially responsible strategy as shown in Thompson et al.
(2022), critically evaluate if Boeing’s strategy is socially responsible and what strategic issues the
company faces with respect to its CSR strategy.
5. Based on your responses to Questions 1-4, what major strategic issues need the attention of
Boeing’s senior management and leadership, and what recommendations would you make to
them?
