SCENARIO 1 – Questions 1, 2, and 3 (21 points, cumulatively)
You and some of your friends have decided to start a business that specializes in hosting parties (such as
birthdays, weddings, or business functions). The business planning is in its early phase, but everyone is
excited to get this business up and running. However, you run into a few issues. There is some
disagreement among you about what processes you will need to run the business. While all of you have
different expertise, there is not a clear understanding of what processes are necessary. An excerpt of one
of your many conversations is the following.
Morgan: I’m telling you; we should be focused on event management and nothing else. This is core to
our business, and it is all that is required.
Max: Who is going to do the finance then? We will need loans to help start us up or did you think money
grew on trees?
Marty: What about human resources? You can’t assume it will just be us doing all the work! This will
mean we will need contracts and some legal knowledge...
Mason: Well, it’s all fine and good to have good operations, but what is our competitive edge? We
should invest in new technologies and build up our information systems to ensure we offer something
unique to the customer.
You sit there thinking that they all have solid arguments, but the business was not even going to start if
this continued. Remembering your studies in BPM, you decide to use a BPM approach to solve these
issues.
Based on the scenario above, answer the following questions.
NOTE: the questions are independent, i.e., your answer to one question will not affect others.

Q1: What would you need to do to design the process architecture for this start-up business? Describe
what you would need to identify and classify the various business processes as management, core or
support processes. (7 points)
Q2: Upon successfully (and finally) determining the process architecture, you all decide to produce some
initial process documentation to assist with the training of new staff (when you are ready to hire
them). Describe what process documentation you would produce that could be helpful to train new
staff. (6 points)
Q3: It has been one year since the business has got off the ground and it is booming. Discussion among
you and your friends have shifted to focus on expansion. While you are all in agreement to expand the
business, there is some concern whether the business is ready. Precisely, there are concerns that the
current running costs for the order-to-cash core process are too high, and they will not be sustainable
if they are not reduced before expanding. However, some of your friends fear that changing the
business processes too much will attract further costs for implementing the changes. Describe what
you would do to redesign the order-to-cash process and propose changes that your friends will agree
to implement. (8 points)

SCENARIO 2 – Questions 4 and 5 (18 points, cumulatively)
You have been working on a new process redesign initiative for a large, Melbourne-based, real estate agency. It
involves implementing a new automated help assistant (‘Bobbie the Bot’) that tenants can use to solve some
basic rental issues (such as ‘can I install picture hooks?’, ‘can you direct me to your plumbing partner’, ‘how
much rent do I owe?’ etc.). The purpose of this was to give senior property managers more time to focus on
more strategic initiatives as a result. Unfortunately, not everyone is convinced about the idea, some believe this is
simply a‘cost-saving measure by management to get rid of staff’.
Based on the scenario above, answer the following questions.
NOTE: the questions are independent, i.e., your answer to one question will not affect others.
Q4: Julie, the manager in charge of this initiative, has requested your advice to help
convince disgruntled employees accept Bobbie the Bot. What would you recommend the manager do to ensure
this project is successful in its implementation? (6 points)
Q5: You and Julie managed to convince most of the employees to accept Bobbie the Bot and, as such, they are
more likely to assist you in this project. However, there remain a few who are dissatisfied. One of these, Glen, a
partner in the agency, believes ‘the IT people have zero idea of what we do. This project will be a catastrophic
disaster that will never generate a positive return on investment’. As part of Glen’s argument, the lack of
strategic alignment was suggested, which Julie quickly rebuffs as an ‘uninformed opinion’. Julie later informs
you that Glen always complains no matter what initiative is proposed. Do you try to convince Glen of the BPM
Project’s likelihood of success? Why/Why not? Further, what should have been done at the beginning of the
project to ensure the likelihood of success? (12 points)
