BLDG2220 Building Construction and Documentation
Start date: 13:00 Tuesday 4 July 2023
Submission date: 13:00 Tuesday 18 July 2023
Assessment Description:
As a supplementary assessment you will the produce two 1:20 detail sections based on the attached 1:100
drawings by a local architect. Your task is to complete detail sections 4 and 5.
This is a pass/fail construction detailing assignment, and will be assessed against criteria 3, 4 and 5 of
Assignment 3 (quality and completeness of detail sections, quality and completeness of annotation and
drawing co-ordination and technique).
Detail sections are to be completed in CAD and submitted as a single PDF file via email to
paul.matthew@uq.edu.au before the due date. As this is a pass/fail assignment late submissions cannot be
accepted. Make sure your PDF submission is smaller than 10MB so that it can be emailed reliably.
UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE YOU TO MAKE ANY KIND OF CONTACT WITH THE
ARCHITECT, THE RESIDENTS OR THE OWNERS OF THE BUILDING.
Assessment requirements:
In addition to the materials shown on the attached drawings, your 1:20 detail sections will use the following
construction techniques and materials:
General guidance:
• Drawings should be on A3 sheets, with title blocks as for Assignment 3
• Only show the elements cut in section – do not show the walls and roof elements deeper into the
section, do not show furniture.
• Exclude doors and windows from your detail section – instead simply show the internal and
external cladding in that location
Structure:
• Ground level floor – concrete slab on ground with 600 (h) x 400 (w) concrete beams under load
bearing and external walls. Indicate 50mm setdown in slab to wet areas.
• Level 1 Floor – F17 hardwood timber joists and bearers – determine joist direction from sections
and size according to AS1684. Indicate 50mm setdown to wet areas, including how joists are
modified, rearranged or resized to generate this setdown.
• Roof – timber trusses in the direction and spacing shown in sections, assume all truss members
are 90 x 45 F5 softwood. Timber roof battens to be F5 softwood, sized using AS1684 to suit the
spacing of trusses and the roof sheeting material. Ceiling battens to be 45x45 F5 softwood at
600mm crs to support plasterboard ceilings, and 90x45 F5 softwood as required to support
plywood ceilings.
• Roof to garage – F17 rafters or purlins, sized as per span, spacing and roof material using AS1684
• Wall framing – 90x45 F5 studs, top and bottom plates and nogging.
Cladding and lining:
• AF colorbond apron flashing – colour to match adjacent roof sheeting
• BAL-1 timber framed balustrade – PB to one side and HWD-V to the other
• BF colorbond barge flashing – colour to match adjacent roof sheeting
• BWK exposed standard grey 190mm thick concrete blockwork
• BWK-H honed finish 190mm thick concrete blockwork
• CONC-P polished finish to structural concrete slab
• CONC-ST steel trowel finish to structural concrete slab
• DP 100mm diameter colorbond down pipe
• EG Lysaght half round colorbond eaves gutter
• EG-C Custom folded colorbond eaves gutter
• FC-1 6mm fibre cement sheets laid vertically. Butt joint to manufacturer’s requirements.
• FC-2 6mm fibre cement sheets laid vertically. 30x30mm F5 coverstrips to vertical joints.
• FT-W 150x150 porcelain floor tiles with min 1:100 fall to floor waste. Lay tiles over grout
with min 1:100 fall to waste and water proof membrane. FT-W on upper level to be
over 15mm compressed fibre cement sheeting
• GB-R Hardies ‘fine texture’ cladding
• HF colorbond horizontal Z flashing between FC-1 and FC-2
• HWD-V 130 x 19mm blackbutt tongue and groove floor boards laid vertically
• MRS-1 Lysaght custom orb metal roof sheeting
• MRS-2 Lysaght klip-lok metal roof sheeting
• MWS-1 Lysaght custom orb metal roof sheeting
• MWS-2 Lysaght trimdek metal roof sheeting
• MWS-3 Lysaght mini-orb metal roof sheeting
• OF Colorbond oversized window head flashing (150mm wide)
• PB 10mm standard plasterboard
• PB-A 10mm acoustic plasterboard
• PB-W 10mm wet area plasterboard
• PF colorbond parapet flashing to match adjacent roof sheeting
• PLY 19mm plywood sheeting
• PLY-C 10mm plywood sheeting – typically 2700 x 1200 panels
• TP 100 x 50 F17 timber post
• WT 600 x 300 porcelain tiles direct stuck to 6mm villaboard wall lining
Expected drawing content and annotations:
• Annotation of structure, materials and finishes (describing materials, size and or spacing, fixing
requirements etc)
• Gridlines
• Floor level line and heights relative to AHD (relating to the site contours)
• Roof pitch and roof cladding material
• Roof construction (drawing and annotating materials, structure sizes and spacings of battens,
trusses and beams necessary to support them)
• Roof accessory elements such as gutters, downpipes, flashings and cappings (where present)
• Ceilings materials (including annotation of materials and any supporting structure needed)
• Timber framed wall and floor construction (drawing and annotating materials, structure sizes and
spacing as appropriate of top and bottom plates, studs, nogging, joists and bearers. Include
setdowns for wet areas.)
• Internal and external wall linings (drawing and annotating of materials, including hardwood
weatherboard profiles, brick coursework, flashings and cappings required for waterproofing etc)
• Concrete slab on ground and strip footings, including any setdowns shown on floor plans, WPM
and sand beds below slabs
• Drawings are to comply with the lineweight, material hatching and annotation conventions of
AS1100.301
